Please help - freezer defrosting question?
Question:I need a quick and easy way to defrost my freezer. I don't want water leaking out whilst waiting for it to defrost the usual way.
Is it safe to use car de-icer in your freezer??
If not, is there a safe alternative?
Answers:
Get yourself a hand held steam cleaner. They are the best. You can do a really bad freezer in 10 - 15 minutes and you won't have water p!ssing all over. Plus, your freezer will be sterilised and have no nasty niffs left behind.
Boiling kettle - place it in and keep it pressed on.
Bowls of hot water in the freezer with the freezer turned off at the mains..Use de icer and you will break it..
PUT A HAIRDRYER AT THE TOP OF THE FREEZER AND CLOSE THE LID ON THE DRYER AND IT WILL BE DONE IN 30 MINUTES
DO NOT PUT IT IN THE FREEZER JUST POINT IT DOWN
use your hairdryer. keep it moving and do not let it near any plastic bits. 5 minutes to 10 mins should do it. put a large towel in the bottom. dry out with fresh towel.
i do know you can buy a freezer de-froster, i cant remember where i have seen it though, but im pretty sure that you could use a car 1 if you really cleaned it afterwards
you can buy special spray to defrost from kleeneze/betterware etc. Still gonna get the water as it melts though. To speed up the process you can put bowls of boiling water in the fridge and close the door (- if you put lemon slices in the water it actually deodorises the freezer also) put plenty of old towels at the bottom of the freezer to soak up all the liquid and this should minimise mess but it's still a mucky job - but someone's gotta do it!
Before i got a self defrosting freezer, i used to hold a hairdryer on a hot heat, the ice used to come away in one big sheet so it didn't take too long, just be careful of the water and electric though.
I don´t think that´s a good idea, just boil your kettle ,pour the boiling water in a Pyrex , ( OVEN PROOF ) & pop inside, close the door, and it will deforst this way. Keep re-filling with hot water
well if it is really bad you can use a butter knife and chip the ice off. Or I would boil water after emptying the freezer out (you can put it all in a cooler) and putting towels down to soak it up and them put them in buckets and ring them out and wash the towels. The wipe down the freezer and put everything back.
Salt might work as well but could be messy
do not do anything with electrical equip...water and electic just don,t mix.........
de icer will break yr freezer use a hair dryer that should wk
I have used a fan heater before now, place it on a stool in front of the freezer.
I use a steam cleaner, it is very safe and sterilises it at the same time.
Try putting a jug of boiling water into your freezer, that will speed it up.
If you can try wiping down the area with fairly hot water, this will help loosen any thick deposits.
If you try to chip away any ice make sure you use a plastic and not metal item to avoid damaging the interior.
there is only one way i think and that is to put a bucket that will fit inside your freezer so the water drops into the bucket and to put a couple of towels down
UUUggghhhh - the worst job in the home this one, without a doubt! I am a lazy **** anyway and I hate the cold so I always try to make the ordeal as painless as possible - I empty the damn thing of all food and turn off the electric supply. I then get a jug of hot water and pour it over the main loads of ice - place the big salad tray from the bottom of your fridge at the bottom to catch any surplus water - get a dirty bath towel and blot any excess too...This procedure "loosens" the chunky thick ice, (I leave mine that long before defrosting that my buildup of ice is usually at least three inches thick). Usually you can remove big chunks of the stuff and just place it quickly in a bucket, bowl or your sink! I use rubber gloves to combat the bloody stuff that decides to stick to my hands.
After the main chunks are removed you can either repeat the procedure and it simply melts the ice and the water makes it way into the tray below or you can place numerous dishes of boiling water into the freezer before shutting the door and leaving it alone for a while - you are going to have to unfortunately, put up with some water unless you are lucky enought to get rid of most of the excess whilst it is still fairly chunky and solid!
Afterwards, re-stock, turn the electric back on and stick the water ridden towel into the washing machine or into the sink until you can be bothered to put a load in.
Don't use de-icer as this will damage the freezer and will most probably gas you out of the vicinity or it will linger within the walls of the freezer when you come to freezing food again.
Good luck - If it is any use to you I thing Bettaware do sell a kind of de-icer specifically for the job but I do believe it costs the earth and isn't all that good - I think it takes forever to achieve the desired results too - then again I may have just been day dreaming of another invention that could be, well, invented!
harry: I hope no one tries your remedy at home, it is extremely dangerous on two counts.
1) Danger of fatal electric shock. Water and electricity is not a good mix.
2)You are likely to start a fire or seriously damage your freezer.
Please everyone out there ignore harry's answer for your own safety.
Pan of boiling water, place in feezer and shut the door for about 5 minutes. Then, CAREFULLY, use a hair dryer to warm the sides of the freezer. Just don't let the hair dryer get any water on it. (I did this for years, now I have a frostless freezer.)
don't know about car de-icer, but u can buy a freezer defroster from Lakeland. Hairdryer and bowls of hot water work well. Consider buying a freezer mat from Kleeneze or similar site (I think it is called homeshopping.co.uk not sure) and it really works. Put one in my freezer 9 months ago and is still relatively frost free. Hope this helps
i use my wallpaper steamer it has a attachment for that sort of thing
