How to get the mildew smell out of towels?

Question:it doesnt matter how many times i wash them or if i use cheap soap or tide or hot or cold water..i always use downy or gain fabric softener. i dont get it why do they still smell?

Answers:
This answer doesn't say much about my house keeping skills, but anyway. Once I totally forgot I had put a load in the washer. i left it in there for at least a week! Well of course as you can imagine, it didn't smell to great. But I rewashed the entire load with OxiClean. It did the trick! It didn't smell at all anymore. I did use like 5 times more than the recommended amount but I was really desperate to get the smell out! I hung most of it to dry then put the rest in the dryer, and no problems. I did spray them with Febreeze before I tossed the clothes in the dryer.

Hope I helped!

If you have that much mildew in your house, you need a dehumidifier.
Are you taking them immediately out of the washer when the load is done, and drying them right away? Try baking soda in the wash with the laundry detergent, or vinegar.
Or it could be that you may need to get new towels.
Take care.
Soak them in one bottle of vinegar to one washer load of water let them soak over night. Rinse them out then put your soap and softener in and wash them.
I had this problem. I found hanging them to dry outside in the sunshine on an old-fashioned folding wooden drying rack helped quite a bit. The other answers mentioned white vinegar and I've found that helpful as well.
I toss in a half cup of bleach in the RINSE water. When the towel is used and becomes damp, you will smell the bleach and not the soap or old used smell . . .
Use Anti-Bacterial Dish Liquid to wash them in. Try some bleach.
