My washing machine is off balance, will it hurt it if I use it?
Question:My brother-in-law over filled it w/ a laod of jeans and now it "walks" across the room anytime it is used. Will it get worse if I continue to use it? And is it hard to fix??

Top load Washing machines are normally self leveling so when this happens the first thing to check would be the straps that the tub hangs from and see if one or more of these perhaps are broken.(always unplug the machine first)To do this lift the lid of the machine and reach in and on top of the tub you will find four rubber straps these are located pretty much one toward each corner of the machine they attach to the frame of the machine and the top of the tub.
These are what keep you machine in balance when running.
You might also check to see if the rods that support the tub did not come out of there little holder cups.
To get to the entire under side you can usally using a putty knife pop off the front of the washing mashine by inserting the putty knife into the crack between the top and front panels at the top approx. one to two inches in from each side and pry up or out the top and or front will pop off depending on your machine.(always unplug the machine first) from here you can see how the straps attach. You should be able to get the straps from your local appliance dealer or shop.
Unbalanced vibration is not good for structure. Most probably not good for people too as it may hurt you. Very dangerous if you have children around. Get fixed it.
Call an appliance repair place. I have never had this problem. Hubby said they could get it back in balance for you so it doesn't jump all over. Good Luck -Hope it doesn't cost too much. Maybe the brother in law can pay for the cost to fix it beings he caused the damages.
Try moving the agitator and barrel inside the machine first. If that doesn't work try to relevel the unit. Some times the auto-leveler get stuck and need a little WD40 or PB Blaster on the pully and cables If you have a wood floor it could over time damage the floor. MIke
you can fix this it yourself, Tip the washing machine back and adjust the legs under the machine, easy job
If a big heavy load unbalanced it, try washing a bunch of your heavy stuff. It won't hurt it. I used to sit on mine. It was funny. But, depending on where it is, we had to nail down a 2 by 4 in front of it!! The one we have now doesn't do that.
He probably allowed the jeans to get unlevel during its spin cycle and/or overloaded the machine. First of all, make sure the machine is sitting level by using a level on all four sides. If it's not, adjust the legs accordingly. Then fill it up with water on the rinse cycle and let it go into spin and see if it bumps or walks. If it still bumps or walks, call a repairman; otherwise, it will get worse -- and by worse I mean it can pour water all over your floor -- or buy a new washing machine -- AND READ THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL THIS TIME and keep it in a safe place so you will be able to look things like this up for yourself when you need to.
yes
Have you tried the little adjustable "feet" underneath it? One or more may be broken, or maybe you just need to re-align them again. This is a simple fix to look for first before you call a repairman out. Good luck.
