Thesponge I use to was dishes smells bad...?

Question:The sponge that I use to wash dishes tends to smell bad after I do dished. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the odor?

Answers:
It's from the bacteria that you've clean doing the dishes and wiping off the counters and table. Throw it in the dishwasher on the top rack, (use a pin or something so it doesn't move around up there) or in the washer when you do the next load. You can also put it into the microwave (real damp) and nuke it on high for a minute. It'll be hot, so be careful when you go to take it out.

Either:

1. run through dishwasher
or
2. wash in washing machine
or
3. get a new sponge
microwave it
they do tend to smell if you don"t dry them after use,or as they get old, change them.
if it smells it has bacteria in it.. i soak my sponges in bleach/water mixture before during and after i use them for dishes..
THROW IT AWAY Sponges hold bactiera which makes them smell. They are cheep, get a new one.
You really shouldnt be using a sponge for dishes...it holds the bacteria in it so you are spreding it to other dishes...and they mold easily which is very dangerous...if you have to clean it use it with comet and clean the sink...or soak it in a bowl with water and comet...it gets the germs out..but if you really want clean dishes, use a dish rag that you can wash and that has no middle to catch germs..hope it helps
Quickest way is to microwave it... it will kill the bacteria that causes the odor. MAKE SURE IT IS DAMP THOUGH... OTHERWISE IT CAN CATCH FIRE OR MELT. You can also freeze it. This should kill the bacteria too, it just takes longer.
place it where it can get some sunlight
I always throw them in the dishwasher when Im done cleaning the counters etc. I have (when i didnt have a dishwasher) used bleach in water and wash them out with it.
When the sponge gets bad enough that you can't rinse out the bad smell, then it is time to replace it. The smell comes from bacteria that may be harmful to your health.

Sponges are cheap. That's why they sell them by the bagfull.
microwave it for about a minute.

Since the bacteria in your sponge are there only because of the moisture constantly there... putting your sponge in the microwave will kill a good majority of the odor causing bacteria.

Just a forewarning though... depending on what type of sponge you have (natural or synthetic) your kitchen will have an odd odor to it while you are microwaving the sponge (and for about 10 minutes after)... it isn't dangerous at all it's just the smell of the heated up material in your sponge.

Just try this... it really works and you won't go through sponges as fast.
Sponges are a breeding ground for bacteria; Use a dish cloth and wash it about every 2 to 3 days in your white load of clothes with bleach in hot water. Air dry it. Don't microwave your sponge all you're doing is spreading bacteria in your microwave.
If it smells after just one use then you might want to get a different/better brand of sponges, a different dishwashing detergent or change the type of food that you eat if neither of the other ideas work. :)

Seriously, after each use, rinse and dry it (squeeze out most of the water) and put it on a rack to air dry completely (not under the sink). Every couple of days either run it through the dishwasher, wash it with your towels, microwave a damp sponge for a couple of minutes or soak it in some disinfectant solution (bleach solution) for about 5 minutes.

Don't use the sponge for cleaning up bacteria ridden messes like raw egg, meat blood/juices or similar spills. Use different sponges for dishes, the counters and in the bathroom.

Toss out a sponge when it becomes permanently stained, becomes brittle, is always smelly or at least once a month.
Yes let it soak in a Little Clorox and Pine Sol. It will kill the Bacteria Smell Built up on it..
before washing the dishes damp it with very little water and put it in the mocro wave for about 30 sec. that kills the smell also you may need to change it now. you should change it every 4-6 months
First of all, stop using a sponge. They are breeding grounds for all kinds of germs and bacteria. Instead, use a dishcloth. You should change your dishcloth and dish towel daily. If you use white ones, they can be bleached which makes them more sanitary.
go to the dollar store they are real cheap and replace them every few days.
throw it out get a new one there are some you can buy that do not collect bacteria i believe they are scotchbright?
