What is the best way to give rid of the smell of cigarette smoke from your house?
Question:

There’s something about vinegar that gets rid of smoke smell. Because the smell of smoke is caused by the leftover resins and tars, vinegar (an acid that cuts through resin and tar) is a great way to clean those surfaces that aren’t made of fabric, and perhaps, some that are fabric. I know what you’re thinking; vinegar doesn’t smell much better than smoke. Well, that’s true, but the smell of vinegar eventually diminishes, cigarette smoke doesn’t.
The carpets need to be shampooed if you want to remove smoke smell. You have a couple of options here; you can either go to your local hardware store and rent a carpet steam cleaner and shampoo the carpets yourself, or you can hire a professional to bring in a big truck and do the dirty work for you. If you want to save money, the choice is obvious, and the guarantees some businesses will make these days smell funnier than the smoke odor you want them to remove.
Baking soda is a good way to get rid of smoke odor. Now, this takes time because what you want to do is get a box of Arm & Hammer, dust the furniture and the carpets (if they haven’t been shampooed), and leave the baking soda to settle for a day or so. That will give it time to absorb some of the smoke smell and moisture around it. Then, vacuum it up and repeat the process a few more times over the course of a week. Use scented baking soda if you like.
Shades, curtains, and fixtures need to be cleaned to get rid of smoke odor. A lot of people forget to clean things like shades, chandeliers, curtains, and wall hangings, but these things have probably collected quite a bit of tar and resin from years of hanging smoke. Do yourself a favor and put the curtains in the washer, buy new shades, and wipe down the chandelier with a good dose of ammonia, just to make sure that smell is gone.
Fresh air is probably the best way to remove smoke smell and odor from a home. It turns out that opening the windows and doors every couple of days for a whole day will help get the stink of cigarettes out of a home. Lord knows why, but I imagine the air flow allows tar and resin particles to escape, leaving the house smelling more like a house than a tar pit.

Do you want your house to smell like a Pre-Ban Pub?
In the meantime, burn some anti-tobacco candles and wash, wash, wash everything!
Don't smoke in it? (Now you knew that at least one person was going to say that). Just open the windows and let some air blow through. You can also get this 1001 carpet spray that you just leave on the carpet - that makes the whole room smell really fresh (well, flowery I suppose)
Ventilate your rooms very well, air purifiers or air conditioners also work well. Oust has advertised its product's ability to get rid of cigarette smells so i would recommend it
the first one to answer is right ban smoking but I take it you need to remove the smell there are a couple of dedicated anti tobacco air fresheners and you can also use scented candles
leave a plate with vinegar in the rooms for a while... sounds weird, but really works
use Oust... lol
Buy those plug in air fresheners and use in lounges and bedrooms and hall. Will make a difference and open a window a little.
My mate smokes 30 a day and I never smell it in her home as she uses the plug ins.
Strike a few matches. I know it sounds silly, but somehow the smell of striked matches dissipates a lot of odours. You could also try opening some windows and using an air freshener specially made for tobacco smells. Hoever, smoke tends to linger so you should buy something like Febreze and spray all your furnishings and furniture. Then, make sure you don't allow smoking in the house again.
VINEGAR. It's cheap and it works. Dump some vinegar in little bowls and set them around your house before you go to bed. Then whenever you clean the hard surfaces, use vinagar. Put some in a spray bottle mixed with water and use it to clean the windows with. When you wash your curtains, put vinagar in with the detergent. When you scrub your floors, add vinagar to the bucket of water. When you clean your carpets, rinse them with some vinagar in the rinse water. In other words, clean with vinagar. It works for almost anything and will get rid of cigarette and pet odors. Remember to dilute it when using it for cleaning and always test fabrics, rugs, carpets, etc. for colorfastness. The vinagar smell goes away after you use it and all you smell is fresh.
stop smoking and then do major cleaning in the house.
Charcoal briquettes will soak up almost any smell. Throw some in a big bowl or bucket and let it absorb the smell. Takes a couple days. I do this in all my rentals. Works like a charm!
Throw the smoker out and don't let them back in until they have quit smoking. That's the best way, but not the easiest, obviously.
Not nice I would move or add another floor bourd level to seal any gaps the problem is if your neighbour wants to smoke in her own home thats her right.
I do agree with vinegar, the vinegar smell goes away fast
ask your neighbour to get an oil burner and the scented oils. I have smokers in my house and I light the burner daily and keep it burning whenever i am home, you should get one too. I have had people come into my house and not believe that 2 smokers live here, the bonus is that the scents can be changed up and mixed together to make your own signiture scent. also i febreeze daily and wash down the walls every couple months and wash curtains every 3 months.
Don't smoke! Keep a bowl of vanilla somewhere. Or bi-carb powder.
I don't think you can do anything about it, as she is allowed to smoke in her own home.
Maybe that is why the last owners left.

wash and clean everywhere (inc curtains/nets/bed linen). .
open all windowns to let in the fresh air. .
then close windows and spray your own air freshner which i will tell you how to make now. . .
all you need is:
empty clean spray bottle,
vodka,
and an essential oil of your choice
ok, put in 2/3 of vodka
and 1/3 of your essential oil of your choice
shake well
and spray :D
i swear this works a treat!
the alcohol kills all bacteria/nasty smells in the air, and the essentail gives the room a nicer longer lasting fresher smell!
better than any air freshner!
can light a few scented candles aswel, to make the room smell even nicer.
that would work a treat for you!
hope this helps!
p.s- if you are pregnant/anyone pregnant in the house be careful what essential oils you choose to use, (esp lavendar) as some essentail oils are dangerous to the foetus of a pregnant woman (which can be absorbed from the air in through the skin and into the blood stream) so just a warning :)
don't smoke inside your house, smoke outside!! airiate your house by opening your windows!!
Dryer sheets work wonders, as does Fabreeze.
Also you should send the smokers outside, so you don't have to worry about cleaning your home of their nasty habit. Good Luck
