How can I stop my bin from smelling?
Question:No matter how often I wash it, my indoor bin smells. It's the sort of bin you stand on the peddle to open and it has a separate compartment inside it where the rubbish actually goes. I use scented bin liners and have thought about putting a smelly pomander between the two compartments. Would this work? Any suggestions?
Answers:
Try putting some baking soda in it. I believe it takes away the smell.
I would try Arm & Hammer Baking Soda.
smelling no problem every body smelling good.
spray all the interior compartments with lysol before putting in the liners
It smells because of bacteria. Spray Lysol in the bin at every bag change.
I'd use backing soda. You don't have to arm and hammer. Any brand will do. Backing soda is a natural odor elemiator and it's cheap.
You're doing the right thing by washing it. I would wash it with bleach, continue to use the scented liners, add baking soda to the bin, and also spray lysol every time you change the trash bag. The question is, why does it smell? How long are you letting food sit in your trash before getting rid of it? You may not be taking your trash out often enough. I do not allow any foods to stay in my trash more than overnight. If I am throwing away food, the trash has to get taken out immediately, or by the next morning. I also use my garbage disposal as often as I can to limit the amount of food that actually goes into a bin. I also use a smaller trash can and small trash bags (so that I don't feel like I'm wasting very expensive bin liners). This forces me to take the trash out quicker b/c my bin doesn't hold much.
Wash at least weekly with bleach. I take mine out on the deck in the sun and let bleach water soln sit while I am at work then make sure it is dry before placing anything back in it. the smell is from bacteria and can make you sick if you are not careful.
If a Lysol spray does not work the smell is probably permiated into the bin. Try laying several dryer sheets in there and see if that will help.
Be sure to empty it everyday. Replace the bin every couple of months, or when it starts to smell.
