I've just moved into a room in a new apartment on campus and the carpet is soooo dirty !! What should I do.
Question:I want to clean it myself but don't know how to get best results. What products should I use? What brands? All I have is a vacuum cleaner..
Answers:
You can go down to your local supermarket/home depot/lowe's and see what kind of carpet cleaner they have that you can rent. They also have the carpet cleaners.
Before you try to clean it yourself, complain about the condition to your RA and see if they can clean or replace it. If that doesn't work, the best way to clean it is with a steam cleaner. You can rent them at most grocery stores or drug stores. The chemicals you will need for the steam cleaner will be available at the store you rent the cleaner from. It's really the only way to get a carpet clean. The other types of cleaners don't really do much more than get up the surface dirt.
just clean it and move on , rentals work to help ya
First contact whoever looks after the campus apartments and show them the problem . They may clean it for you.
You can get several dry powder shampoos for carpet that you sprinkle on and then remove with a vacuum cleaner. There are also foam cleaners where you spray a wet foam onto the carpet, wait for it to dry and then vacuum. Check supermarket and Dollar stores. Read the specific cleaners instructions.
A very good cleaner is the rug-doctor which you can rent from many supermarkets.
good luck.
That's gross, I'd probably pull it up. Look and see what's underneath, maybe it's livable. Possibly buy a huge area rug they come in so many designs and colors.
Your best option may be to rent a carpet cleaning machine (the kind that you wet vac with) from your local hardware store or grocery store. They are a cheap way to get great results.
Also, you could try a natural disinfectent/smell improver like tea tree oil, diluted in water (test a patch of carpet to make sure it won't stain), sprayed all over the carpet, then blotted up with cotton padding.
My husband has this can of Tuff Stuff (we get it from Wal-mart) and it works great. We have a cat and she has had an occassion where she vomited on the carpet. We used Tuff Stuff and there is no stain or smell! All you have to do is find your trouble spots, spray it on (it foams up so it really gets in there!) then take a towel and lightly scrub the area and let it dry. Then once you've done all of the spots just vaccum!
Go to your local supermarket or Home Depot and rent the machine it will be worth it in the long run. And its not that expensive. You will get the Machine and the solution to clean the carpet. Maybe you can link up with someone and split the cost.
you need to go rent a steam vacume they have these at grocery stores and hardware stores. they let you keep the vacume for at least a few days so you can get it done. or if you have the money you could purchase a hoover steam vac, they are nice and they work really well. as far as your chemical goes you'll want to find one that is economical and cleans well
Steam clean it.
to save money, go buy a scented windex or kitchen counter spray that cuts bacteria...spray throughout the floor.
this will dampen all the dust on the floor and help freshen as you now vacuum it up..
Your rug should have been cleaned before you moved in. Very nicely, talk to your landlord about this and possibly they will have it cleaned for you
Your apartment is something your landlord should be liable for. bettyk
Go to the local grocery store and rent a steam cleaner, they can tell you how to use it and what cleaner to use with it. They work really well, but I don't recommend doing it on a wet day, it takes too long to dry and gets musty smelling.
Request that the Facilities Department clean the carpet if on campus housing... if private owned property, request that the property manager arrange for a cleaning. While the other answers are accurate about the low cost alternative of renting a "steam" cleaner from your local hardware store or grocery, these are only soil extractors... they do not actually have heaters that steam the carpet. If you don't mix the chemical properly or you don't get all of the water out you will just create a bigger problem. You should be able to find a local carpet cleaner that uses a truck mounted steam unit which will be your best option and should not cost more than $50 to $75 for a small apartment.
