Vinegar is only used diluted in lots of water to keep pet odors at bay. To clean you can use a mix of baking soda and water.
(4 spoonfuls per quart of warm water) up to 6 if stronger mix is needed.
Carpet Shampoo Recipe
1/2 cup Liquid Tide
1/4 cup Clorox-2
1/4 cup Vinegar (WHITE) (if you have a bad odor use 1/2 cup)
Add this to 1 - gallon of hot water in machine. If you need to pre-treat some areas you can mix this in a spray bottle and spray the area before you start.
I also use CHEAP shaving cream for pre-treating stains. Just spray the foam on the stain and tap it in the carpet with an old toothbrush. Then let the shaving cream dry. I usually do this the night before since I have to rent a machine. That way I can just shampoo and get the machine back in a timely manner.
To clean stains on a carpet: mix equal parts of vinegar, lemon juice and salt.
Good Luck !
We always dissolve our regular laundry powder (OMO or BIO ZET) and add to a carpet cleaning machine. It works better than all those bought cleaners and smells lovely, too. We have expensive new carpets in our house.. they have not faded or damaged through this. (With three small children and pets they do need regular cleaning though.)
Vinegar/water is a way to strip soap/shampoo out of the carpet since they actually cause the carpet to look dirty faster.

I have my own steam cleaner, and when I clean I add some hydrogen Peroxide to the soap dispenser,,,it has never colored spot my carpet, and the stains come out and do not come back
I have used pine-sol in my carpet cleaner. There is many different scent pine-sol's they work wonderful and leave the room smelling clean.
