I live in Lakeport,CA & have the city water, it smells like bleach is it safe?
Question:I am worried about using this water to bath my daughter in and each time she takes a bath she gets a rash. How safe is the water that we have in Lakeport, CA. Lake County? I tried to look up a water report but got no where with that due to no reports for Lake Co. water. How do I find out if it is safe for our family or not? Please help. There is reports for some of the cities in Lake County, but not for Lakeport. Please help, thanks.

Chlorine will dissipate (for free, no filter!) if you let the water sit for about 24 hours. The amounts used in city water systems shouldn't be causing a noticeable smell, but you can call the city water department if it bothers you. It is possible they are pumping short-term extra chlorine because of bacterial contaminants, or it's possible their mix is off. They will also have reports from the water testing they are required to do that may help you feel more at ease.
I would be surprised if the chlorine in your water is causing the rash, though. Bubble bath, soap, shampoo, bath-tub cleaning residue, laundry detergent (esp fabric softeners), lotions, and sunscreens are all likely culprits. What we do with our skin-sensitive kids is short baths (less than five minutes); luke-warm water, never hot; no soap; baby shampoo as the last thing before they get out; towel dry and then cover them with a non-scented lotion like cetaphyl or eucerin. We use unscented/free-and-pure laundry detergents and never do fabric softener, and we have had to look around to find a brand of sunscreen that works for them without causing a rash.
So good luck!
chlorine is a carcinogen. use filters on your taps to provide safe, clean water. you can have a plumber install a filter or buy the ones you can put on yourself. they are available for the kitchen as well as the shower head.
