Why are clothes coming out smelly?

Question:I have an outdoor laundry room and I live in Az., so I know (from years of experience) that I can't leave the clothes in the wash for a long time beacuse the water will turn smelly. Lately, it seems like the clothes come out smelly even when they do not get left for long. It was never like this before, so I don't understand it. People used to say how our clothes always smelled so good; not anymore. I'm not sure if it is the washer or the dryer causing this problem.

Answers:
If it's your washer that's smelling up your clothes, add one gallon of vinegar to the water in the wash cycle without the clothes. That should get rid of the smell, see if that helps.

In the rinse cycle too, you could add about 1 cup or less of vinegar, it will get all the built up soap and gunk out of the clothes. Then rinse again.
If the problem continues, it could be your water source.

Never use bleach and ammonia together, they chemically react with each other causing a dangerous gas.

Hope the vinegar helps. Good luck.

try a cup of lysol in the wash water and don't leave the clothes in the washer long after it has stopped. mildew will appear if the clothes remain bunched in a wet position for long.

the mildew will last even for the next few washings. Lysol seems to work.
Unless your washer has a filter that you clean (usually on top of the washer under the lid), I doubt either of these machines are the problem. I would run some bleach through your washer without any laundry to see if that helps in case there was some old water left in the machine. If your machine has a filter on top, clean out the old lint and wipe out the machine.
I don't see how the dryer could be causing any problems unless you put something smelly in it at one time. Wipe out the inside drum with a 50/50 solution of bleach and water and wipe clean. Other than that, it has to be your water supply.
you do a wash with only amonia and bleach and let it wash with no clothes do it like 2 times than hopefully the smell is gone but if its the dryer there might be lint in the suction hose and also vacumm out the lint that gets inthe lint thing inside the dryer
smell you clothes when you take them out the washer to see if its the washer that has that smell
but if it is the dryer that smells like that i suggest its time to buy another one
try rinsing your clothes in a fabric softener like COMFORT or LENOR and they will come out smelling realy fresh
Try running a load with a disinfectant cleaner. Such as pinesol in the washer, your washer holds about 24 gallons. I would do this periodically.

If you find that it may be in the dryer, try wiping out the inside of the dryer with vinegar and allowing to air out. If you don't feel like wiping. Soak an old towel in vinegar and put it in the dryer and allow to dry.
