We have a whirlpool 7244e washing machine which is leaving lint on clothes ? problem or is there a filter?

Several causes come to mind. One, are you sure that no one is leaving any debris in their pockets ... ie. paper towels, tissues, etc.? Second, yes, there should be a lint filter that you can clean, and should clean before each load. If you have a manual, read it (All else has already failed). Third, check the discharge line and exhaust for lint buildup that will prevent new lint from being expelled from the machine. You may have to remove the hose from the machine to give it a good cleaning. I am supposing that you are using an anti-static product of some sort to avoid the possible static cling holding onto the lint. If all of these things check out, and you still have a lint problem, then it may be time to call a repairman. Good luck ;)
