Smelly Carpet!?

Question:A couple of weeks ago there was a flood in my bedroom and my rug ( I have a bare floor except for the area rug) got wet, I took it outside to dry out but when I brought it back in it stunk REALLY bad. I put carpet freshener on it, I sprayed febreeze on it but it still smells. It it not an expensive rug but I like it and would prefer to not have to thow it away. Is there anything I can to to get rid of the smell?

Answers:
fabreeze it and then sprinkle baking soda or baby powder all over it and then vacuum it. It is cheaper than shampooing it and it will extract all the bacteria from it.

Shampoo it you dummy.
Shampoo it and take it outside and let it air dry, while you have it outside spray it with Febreze or Arm and Hammer linen freshner(like febreze) the smell should be gone.
If it is washable, wash it first in VINEGAR - this will kill the mold/mildew without damaging your carpet. THEN wash it with soap.
If not washable -
Carpet shampooer or Stanley Steemer [ call them -yes they do area rugs - might be better to send it in than clean on top of your floor.
TIP: always buy washable rugs for bath and kitchens.
If you have a carpet shampoo machine, try adding a little bit of Whisk detergent or Tide HE with some Downy fabric softener, then do a good rinse. May have to do it couple of times. Use warm to almost hot water.
Some rugs are dry clean only and stink horribly if wet. Then they don't dry fast enough and can mold. Wet wool can really reek too.
Hi there. I am a professional carpet cleaner and I can tell you that shampooing a carpet/rug will a)will not get rid of the entire smell and b)the rug will resoil very quickly due to the surfactants in the shapoo. The surfactant will act like a dirt magnet. Have you rug professonally cleaned. Make sure they are not using shampoo or steam cleaning and suggest they use a product called Milgo. This will totally kill the enzyme causing the smell.
Bring it outside and wash it with TIDE and a hose. Line dry it.
buy one just like it or wash on gentle cycle at home or laundry mat good luck
I would take the carpet out and throw it away because mold is growing in it now. I had the same problem and I just threw the carpet out.
