How to clean a vegetal sponge?
Question:I use a 100% natural sponge in the shower and wonder how you have to clean it so it stays hygienic but keeps its natural softness and characteristics. I heard a natural spong can last forever but how oh how doe I keep it bacterie-free?

Mix 1 teaspoonful of salt for each quart of water (4 cups) bring to a boil, remove from heat and place sponge (fully covered with the solution) until the water is cool. squeeze and allow to dry completely before using again.
Mine are over 6 years old and in very good condition.
Put it in your dish washer and run it...=)
Run it through a cycle in the dishwasher. Running it in a washing machine could damage it. In the dishwasher you won't have any mechanical action, just hot water being sprayed. You can even run the dishwasher without soap. the hot water should be enough to get the sponge free of bacteria...even better than a washing machine would.
Get it wet and run it in a micorwave for 1-2 minutes. It's important that it's wet. The water will boil, steam, and help cleanse.
You can also put it in a jar with vinegar and let it soak overnight. You'll need to rinse it well afterwards.
Spray or pour on some White Vinegar allow to sit for about thirty minutes then rinse in hot water
Or saturate with some water and put in microwave for thirty seconds on high then take out and allow to air dry in rack or hang to dry

The way i clean my sponges both kitchen and bath...I pop them in the microwave for 2 min. It comes out like new and 100% bacteria free. The Surgent General suggested that, but i've doing doing this long before. It works.
