Why do you have to wash new sheets b4 use? difference between 100% cotton and 100% cotton sateen?
Question:bought bedsheets that are250 thread count.
front of package says 100% cotton
back of package says 100% cotton sateen (algodon)
note: the word algodon has and accent mark over the second "o"
i put the sheets on the bed already but the pkg says to maching wash before use. I really don't fell like taking them off, washing and putting them back on the bed. is it really necessary?
Answers:
"Algódon" is Spanish and means cotton.
They don't have to be washed right out of the package, but there is a starch-like product in them that makes them rather stiff, giving that new, crisp feel. It doesn't fully come out in the first wash, in my experience. Some people may be allergic or sensitive to it, so washing before using is a good idea.
The cotton sateen has a silk-like appearance without the feel of silk. I don't like the sateen because it feel greasy to me, and I find it creates a lot of static, especially in dry winter. It does look nice in bed sheets when woven with ordinary silk to create stripes, though.
All new sheets, clothing, etc., are coated with something that protects the material. the sheets will be softer if you wash them, and smell better
Algodon is spanish for cotton. The reason I wash my sheets first, is because they are pressed before packging and have starch in them. Not to mention the dirty hands, machines, dust, etc. that is on the sheets. Sateen sheets have the stripe on them, if you look at that stripe, it is shinier and softer than the stripe next to it.
Manufacturers recommend washing before use because of all the chemicals and dyes that they use. A wash with your own detergent helps remove some of that.
sateen is just a type of cotton, supposed to be softer and slightly shiny.
