Why do dry cleaners always have the person who does the alterations sitting in view of everyone in the window?

It is for advertising and the light. Much of the minor work is done by hand and needs plenty of light.
To make the public aware that they offer that service. Hard to find those sort of cleaners around any more.
Looks like love. Somebody's taking good care of your things.
I would guess for the light
It shows the service is provided on site as opposed to be sent somewhere else. There is less chance of loosing your clothing.
