Is it the motor or a busted belt?
Question:My washing machine is broken, it was fine but then after a normal load of towels it broke. I figured it was cause of an unbalance in the load but after I emptied it, it won't turn. It was fine till the rinse and spin cycle. Is it the motor or the belt and how much do you think it would cost to fix it?
Answers:
Part of your qustestion depends on the brand... Some washers don't have belts... Does it fill with water? if so, it could be the lid switch... Did you center the tub after the load was removed? There are quite a few possibilities... I am an autherised appliance repair man, and I just have to have more info to diagnose this online...
If it hums it may be the motor. If it just isn't turning then it's probably the belt. Running your machine off balance most likely won't cause harm to the motor but you may find you won't ever be able to balance it properly again. Belts are cheap $5-$10. Put it in yourself. If it's the motor, it's cheaper just to buy a used one for $100 or so. Good luck.
if it wont turn at all manually, it may be locked pulley. a good place to check prices is sears home central. if you live in area that has appliance repair company that could come out and give diagnostic in home, call them to see whats wrong with machine first , call around see how much they charge for that, and if that fee or portion of it would be applied to repair cost. if not i have a book that says u should test if it wont agitate, faulty lid switch, faulty timer, faulty drive belt, faulty agitate/spin solenoid, or faulty transmission or clutch.
