i wash mine in the washer and dry on low in the dryer. They have stayed together and are just fine. Good Luck
I also add lots of softner, make them even more wonderful to wrap up in.
I just put in washing machine on cold or warm and dry
and mine are years old - they wash fine.
I wash mine in cold water, and lay flat to dry! I put lots of downy in mine and they smell so great! Hope this helps!
The very best way is to wash it by hand...
The easiest way is to use the washer on a gentle cycle.
I wash mine in warm or cold water. I usually put mine in the dryer so that the lint and animal hair come off. You can wash them with your clothes or by themselves..I usually wash afghans all together at once. Today's yarns are more washer/dryer friendly...so wash away!
I've been washing some of mine for over 20 years and they still look great. I wash them on the gentle cycle, add extra fabric softener, then put them in the dryer on low heat. They actually retain the fabric softener smell better if I take them out of the dryer while slightly damp. I just lay them across the bed and turn on the ceiling fan and they are completely dry in a couple of hours and smell great.
Unless you KNOW the fiber content, DO NOT directly place your afghan into the wash! If it's made of wool, or some other natural fiber, the wrong water temperature or the wrong agitation action by your machine could felt or shrink your beloved afghan. If this is the case, I'd recommend washing it by hand in your bathtub. Also, if the afghan is old/antique, regardless of fiber content, I'd recommend washing it by hand.
If you DO know the fiber content, then follow the washing instructions as described by your washing machine instructions. Use a gentle soap that won't damage the fibers.
When it's been washed you'll want to air dry -- and block it -- if possible; this eliminates some of the "pilling" that occurs in the dryer. (Don't forget, it if has any natural fiber content, placing it into a dryer could damage it by shrinking/felting it.)
I hope this helps,

PS: If the afghan has never been washed before, I do not recommend washing it with other items as the dye may bleed. To set the dye, add some white vinegar (an ounce or two should do) to the wash water.
My wife's favorite past time is making afghans. She made one for her sister 17 years ago has been washed in the machine many times. Just put it on the gentle cycle and it will be fine. Also dry in the gentle cycle.
