Is it best to put silverware handle side up or down in the dishwasher?

Question:Which way gets it cleaner?

Answers:
Load silverware with some handles up and some handles down to prevent nesting.

Always put your silverware in upside down. It cleans them better, because the water is coming from the bottom of the washer up, and you don't have any nasty accidents of poking yourself on a fork, or cutting yourself on a knife while loading or unloading.
Handle side down. I don't know how yours is set up for the silverware compartment but with mine, things like forks tend to get "stuck" if I put them handle side up. Besides, it's more important that the eating end of the utensil is cleaner because that's the end the food will be on. If you're talking about purely cosmetic things like water spots due to hard water, it won't matter much which way you put the silverware. In that case you need to put one of those additives to the dishwasher detergent in along with the dishwasher detergent or get water softener. (I have hard water, so spots are always a problem, and I still have to check my silverware to make sure it's "clean". . .:( ) I hope that helps!
Silverware should go handle down as they will get cleaned better because they are getting the spray from above. Except for sharp knives...pointed end down so no one gets stabbed!
When I owned a dishwasher I always put my silverware up because I found it rinsed the silverware better. I also had less spots.
