Hygenic Chopping Boards. Wood or Polypropylene?
Question:Please could you help end a debate in my family over the more hygenic chopping boards.
On the one hand you hear the argument that wood is unhygenic because you are not supposed to bleach it and therefore cannot sterilise it. To counter that is the fact/fiction that wood contains an antibacterial agent naturally and therefore a clean board will disinfect itself.
On the otherhand, it is said that the polypropylene boards close over food forced into cuts and makes it impossible for these to be adequately cleaned. Their plus side is that they can be boil washed and bleached.
So which is better?
I am eliminating glass from the question because it's too slippery a surface to be safe so the question relates purely to wooden or plastic boards.
Answers:
Wood is fine and the best way to clean it is by rubbing salt into it. After that use half a lemon squeeze it over the wood and rinse off this gives it a nice fresh smell. Dry as normal.
I don't think it really matters, just as long as you use the right stuff to clean it.
wood is better
wood is natural
plastic is toxic
Chopping boards made from wood contain more bacteria than toilet seats. FACT saw a programme on TV
plastic is easier and safer to clean
Buy two plastic board.
One for raw meat items, the other for non meat items.
wood is hard to clean cause it abzobs
In experiments, food was prepared on wood and plastic boards. After a while, the amount of bacteria on each was measured. The wooden boards had less bacteria. Full stop.
Wood is better & can be sanitized easier.
I use neither one. My "board" is marble.
marble or glass as it does not absorbs anything and can be bleached, sterilised cleaned etc easily
