How to get smells namely tabacco out of a sofa?
Question:My husband smokes and while lying on our sofa the last week I realised how bad it smells. I can't really take off the cushion covers to wash them as they are not meant to be washed and I need to know how to get the rest of the sofa smell free. It is totally gross.
Answers:
Try sprinkling some Baking soda on your sofa for a couple of days, then vacuum up
OxyClean Worked Wonders
Like you, I have a white sofa and chair in my living room. I was ready to toss them out and buy new until a friend told me about OxyClean. I mixed it up according to the instructions and went over my entire sofa in less than half an hour. My sofa came out almost as clean as new and I didn't even rinse it. At the end of summer I did it again and that sofa looks better than it did when I had it professionally cleaned! So for about an hour of my time and very little money I have an almost new piece of furniture
Mean Green Does the Job
I use an inexpensive product in my carpet cleaner for my carpets and upholstery. It works best on the toughest grime including cigarette smoke and residues. I use it on my walls, floors, stove and just about everywhere. But dilute it for items of color just in case fading may occur. The product is called "Mean Green". This is not to be confused with "simple green". It can be found at most dollar stores, Family Dollar, and Dollar Zones.
If you rent a rug doctor that has the upholstery attachment, put half the amount of Mean Green that the cleaner requires for upholstery. Do a test spot first, of course. You can do that by spraying a squirt from the bottle directly on an inconspicuous spot and wiping it with a damp white washcloth. If Mean Green won't get the stains out, I promise you, nothing will!
Good Use for Vodka
I own a business which styles and sells wigs, falls, and other synthetic hairpieces, and the best trick I've learned for getting smells out of those fibers works just as well on other fibers and fabrics. Just mix water and vodka in a 1:1 ratio and spritz it right on. Works as well as commercial products like Febreeze. It evaporates quickly, leaving no alcohol-scent behind.
The Fake Febreeze Recipe
2 C. Fabric Softener
2 C. Baking Soda
4 C. warm water
Mix and place in a spritzing bottle. Use just like you would the expensive Febreeze from the store. If you want, you can use the unscented fabric softener and then add a few drops of essential oil to make it a scent that you prefer. I just use Snuggle.
With the Baking soda method you should at first do this about a couple times a week until the odor has been eliminated then just a few times a month to maintain the fresh smell
Good Luck !
Fabreeze
A bucket load of Febreeze. And make him go outside for goodness sake. He's killing you too if he smokes indoors.
You can get anti tabbacco shake, oust is a air freshner which eliminates the smells rather than covering them up, try bicarbonate of soda just shake some on the sofa or any where else it smells leave for 30 minutes and hoover the bicarbonate of soda off it, it should smell. well clean.
Tell him to stop smoking
Try calling a professional upholstery cleaner. They might be able to get most of the odor out. Smoke odor never really comes completely out! Good luck!
upholstery steam cleaner
buy one and do it yourself or rent one or get it done by a pro.
Spray your sofa with vinegar and water. The vinegar will absorb the odors. Also, place small bowls of vinegar throughout the house to get rid of odors.
