How should I clean an antique cameo locket?

Question:The locket belonged to my great grandmother, its probably close to a century old if not older. It looks gold, but I'm not sure of that. It's surprisingly good shape but tarnished and looks as though its probably not been cleaned in several decades. I would like to see if I could clean it up a little bit but can't afford to have it professionally done. I would like to know the best way to do this without damaging the piece at all.
Thanks!

Answers:
First off, if you plan to sell it, DON'T CLEAN IT! It will lessen the value. If you want to wear it and "need" it clean, baking soda, water and a soft rag.

Gold does not tarnish or lose its lustre. Proof - The egyptian mummys -several thousand years old and just as shiny as day one.
So you got silver or other. Wait till you can afford it.
