How do I remove rust from cast iron pots and pans?
Question:
Answers:
tomato juice or sauce, the acidity does the work!
Well, since I wanted to know, too, I looked it up:
Use steal wool first then when dry rub some cooking oil in it. Place a paper towel and set until use.
Well my grandma always washed them first and then put them in a fire. Always worked for her if someone made the mistake and wanted to face her wrath by washing her cast iron pots and pans. You really are only supposed to clean them with oil.
Wash in hot soapy water and then rub the rust out with one of those blue soft scrub pads.then rinse well and dry out.put on stove, and heat on low til thoroughly dry.Wipe a little bit of oil around in pan and then wipe to get excess out.Turn upside down and store in oven..
Steel wool, like Brillo or SOS pads, and hot water. Scrub until rust is gone, then dry over a burner on your stove. When the water is dried, use SHORTENING on a paper towel and rub it over the inside. Let it heat for 3-5 minutes. Store in a dry place, like the oven. Every time you use the cast iron, rinse in hot water and use a nylon brush to "scrub" it. Then, dry over heat and reapply the shortening with a paper towel. Over time, this will "sweeten" the cast iron and you won't get the rust. If you don't use your cast iron very often, Once it is cool from being heated, spray the outside of the pan with cooking spray, lightly, and put in a box or wrap with newspaper and store in a dry place.
I have answered this a dozen times and found that the asker picks the solution that is usually wrong---go to resolved questions and look up the solutions. Not trying to be cranky but it is a true statement.
