How to clean horrible toilet rim?
Question:We are going to move to a new house and I noticed on the day of the inspection that the toilets have a yukky, gross, thick, brown toilet rim, as if the owners had never cleaned them! I don't know whether it is feces or just mineral build-up.
I would like to replace the toilets, but if our budget does not allow this, how on earth can I clean this rim (without fainting, LOL)?
Thanks!

Ok first off, Big Thick Rubber gloves, I mean... you don't know where that toilet has been right? I remove buildup lime, rust, whatnot with CLR, available at any store just about. Ok... Bleach that sucker... or use something containing bleach, comet, soft scrub, you get the idea... ;)
There are lots of products available to help you, try Comet or any type of abrasive cleanser first, and lots of scrubbing, that should take it off.
Buy some playtex gloves and try the usual cleaners. If it is some type of mineral deposit, you may have to buy one of the products made for that purpose. Lowes will have a couple products that work on mineral deposits.
bleach, bleach, bleach!
pour about a cup of bleach in the toilet and don't use it or flush it for an hour or so. flush, then follow up with some clingy, bleach toilet cleaner like lysol cling w/ bleach and a good scrub with a toilet brush...
this will knock out any yuckies that might be lurking...
good luck :-)
the product CLR is made for just this purpose. It stands for "calcium, lime, and rust". I would say use this product generously, just pour it all over the inside of the bowl, let it sit a few minutes, and scrub. It should definitely come off.
vinegar is one of the best thing to clean almost anything with and its cheaper than most cleaning products. the only downfall is the smell. but that fades within hours of using it. its definatly worth a try..
wear gloves and get some sos pads and scrub scrub
Start with rubber gloves, laytex are one time use and you may be at it for awhile. Bleach will disinfect the gunk and ajax powder will provide an abrasive. Don't use steal wool because it can scratch and leave rust - then you need CLR or a new toilet. Turn on the fan and open windows, wear a mask, the odors may not be nice. Sounds like you are dealing with the scumm of the scumm.
Vinegar and baking soda. That cleans just about anything. Plus it's non-toxic. ;)
