Strange white-ish sediment in washing machine?

Question:I used my washing machine today only to discover that my clothes were covered in a strange white-ish/gray/brown (different colors) sediment when the cycle finished. I'm not sure how this stuff got in my washing machine. I've been away for a week while work (shingle removal) was being done on the house, though i'm not sure if this is of any concern. The stuff washes off fairly easily, so i'm not extremely worried at this point. Could anyone tell me how this stuff got in my machine and what it is?
Thanks

Answers:
lime or calcium depositis. buy some iron out at yer local hardware store, and put a tablespoon or 2 in yer wash next time, that will help clean it out. hope this helps

use liquid detergent
Did you use washing powder?

maybe the washing powder didn't rinse away properly
It was something that dissolved in a pocket. It may also be filler added to powder detergent but I think it was something in a pocket.
It sounds like lime...I'm not sure if you can use this in a washing machine, but I use white vinegar in the dishwasher and to clean lime from a lot of things.
could something be wrong with your water that's my guess
