Exactly, I have a dust problem too so everything that everyone has recommended so far is what you can do to help damper it down a bit. Replace filters frequently. I have bought the $12-19 dollar 3M filters which gets costly. Consider buying one of the washable filters. They are around $25 but they last for years. You just cut it down to fit the size you need. When it's dirty fill up the bath tub with hot water and some disinfectant and let it soak. Rinse it well and give it a good shake. I also have put cheesecloth in the smaller vents to help catch the dust bunnies a bit. If you can have your ducts professionally cleaned that will help. Some companies will 'encapsulate' the old dust under a impermeable coating that is just like new duct work that is not all dusty.
The very best thing you can do is look for a vacuum that is classified as a "water trap vacuum" Traditional vacuums simply re-arrange the dust in the house and not really catch it. A water trap vacuum will deposit the dust into a pan of water then it can not be expelled back into the air. They are costly but last an entire lifetime. They are far superior. You really know that you are getting the dirt and dust up when you see the clean water you just put in the pan turn to brown LOL. Kind of gross but there is no doubt that you cleaned the dust and dirt and not just re-arranged it. Happy Cleaning!
Dust is a huge problem at my house because I live in a canyon where the wind kicks up the dust everyday about 2PM. I started dusting with micro-fiber cloths and fabric softener sheets. I actually take the used fabric softener sheets to wipe down mirrors and all of my glass surfaces. It seems to repell the dust from accumulating so fast. Endust does it too, but since I do so much laundry, I always have fabric softener sheets on hand. The microfiber rags tend to make the dust stick to them rather than scattering it around.
I had the same problem and I bought quality filters for my central air unit and after a few days I saw a big decrease in the dust in my house. The filters caught a lot more than the cheaper filters I had used previously. Just find something with a high Merv rating. It will also help with pet and smoke smells in your home if you have any.
Ah, awaiting the fabled dust elimination machine. Aren't we all? The best thing I have found is to use a vacuum to dust, not Swiffer, or feather duster, or anything like that. Vacuum it out of there and it will stay away longer. Then use your wood polish, glass cleaner, etc.
dust starts from the outside
Things you can do
Change out your air filter OFTEN for your AC/Heat
Heavy-Duty clean. do this one room at a time, working in the one with the least amount of windows & furthest away from the outside first
(1) work top down.. dust the ceilings. wipe down the walls, dust the edges of mirrors, furnishings, etc.. wash the covers of light fixtures (take them off, allow them to cool & then wash with a small amount of dish soap)
The idea is to remove and to bring down all dust
Then wipe down funishings, again from the top down & then sweep, next go around the edges with a small brush (an old fat exterior paint brush works well) and get all the dust off the bases boards and out of the corners. Wash Curtain, Vacume cloth sofas & chairs... clean 100% of everything. then
Vacume the floor (even if it is harwood) & then wash the baseboards & then the floor
Then with things like your computer that attract dust, go to an office suply store and buy the anti-static spray & use that (but not on glass.. on all the plastic or metal parts)
When you clean your glass, clean with a mixture of amonia, water, and vinegar (mostly water)... then wipe down again with just vingar water
The kind of air purifies that has a filter will help
My son was severely allergic to dust & dust mites.. in order to stop his nosebleeds as a small child... this is what I had to do... now, even with him 19 & in his own place, I still do this cleaning at least 1 time a month... things just are nicer & not yucky & smell better this way :)
I prefer to use enviro friendly cleaners that are also hypo-allergenic as well
Good luck
use swiffers, they work great
Dust comes from outside and inside. It is produced by our skin too. So the more people in your house, the more dust you are going to have.
The only thing you can do is keep cleaning, top to bottom.
You HAVE to get Swiffer Dusters! They work GREAT! And they are actually kind of fun to use. FOR REAL!
The starter package comes with one plastic handle and five dusters. You simply insert the duster onto the handle, shake to fluff, and dust. The dusters have thousands of "fiber fingers" that trap dust in your home, rather than just spreading it around. They are also GREAT for getting into hard-to-reach places, like under the computer monitor, keyboard and around knick-knacks. The dusters are very flexible so they can get between tight spaces, too. They also work great on televisions- which I know your HUGE tv gets really really dusty! And I'm sure they would work well on your fish tank.
Get some and I will help you clean!
