Can I re-dye faded pants?

Question:I wear a lot of black clothing; my pants in particular have faded into a dull shade of almost gray. I bought some powdered black dye that I want to try, but I want to know: has anyone done this, and did it work?

Also, would this work on t-shirts with wording on them, say if I dyed it inside-out? Or is that best left undone altogether?

And before anyone whines about a person wearing black all the time; I do it because I like the symbolisim of black vs white (I'm an author) and it reminds me of the night, when I can sit in peace and quiet and not have to worry about my daytime life.

Answers:
Yes, you can re-dye black things back to black, depending on the fabrics. The printed t-shirts however are best left faded, because the printing will change colour too.
There is a specialist laundry product for washing blacks, it has a little color in each wash, keeping them black. Can't rememember the name though. It was available at the supermarket. Just make sure all the load is black.

Yes. U can try.
Yep, it works. I have often dyed my faded black t-shirts and jeans using a little packet of dye.

Things to consider:
1-The quality of the product. You get what you pay for so don't buy the cheapest stuff available but Tintex is a good inexpensive brand.
2-The dyed clothing will always leak a bit of dye every time you wash it again. Since you wear a lot of black this shouldn't be a problem, just remember to wash all blacks together, cold water, etc...
3-Follow the instructions on the packet. Failure to stir properly will result in streaks, even on black. I have learned the hard way that I really needed to stay at the sink stirring instead of answering the phone and yacking for 30 mins.
4-if you dye in the washing machine instead of the a large pot or sink, please do an empty load of water and bleach before you leave the machine for others to use. The dye will leave stains and will stain the clothing in the next load if you don't bleach the machine after a dye job.
Yes they both can be dyed with good results.I dyes all kinds of things in my day.The secret to the dye lasting is iron the jeans when they are almost dry and it sets the dye well.the first wash use some vinegar to stop bleeding of the dye.Always turn jeans wrong side out to prevent fading...
