I use Oxy powder (I buy the Dollar store brand) in every load that I wash and my clothes never have a film and keep their color alot longer. Depending on what kind of film it is I also use Dawn dishsoap sometimes for oily film or stains.
I use liquid laundry doap, oxi clean powder and baking soda for smells.
Maybe your washer need a good cleaning, At least twice a year, you should clean the washer of all the residue that builds up.
Just take a quart of while vinegar and pour it in the washer, and let the washer run the full cycle, this should help with your problem.
