How much will cotton shrink?
Question:my stepdad gave me a couple of t-shirts and they are all too big for me. They are 100% cotton, how can i shrink them to fit?
Answers:
Cotton can shrink quite a bit but usually has been pre-washed to prevent excessive shrinkage. Because they are t-shirts, I assume they are knit shirts. Knits tend to shrink too. So combined with the knit structure and cotton fiber you can maybe get the tees to shrink 2-3%.
However, when something shrinks, it rarely shrinks "evenly". You run the risk of damaging the tees and making them skewed or crooked.
If it won't hurt your dad's feelings, then consider selling them on eBay or at a re-sale shop and then use the money to buy new shirts in the right size.
now days cotton just dont shrink like it did in the past. use hot, hot water when you wash them and high heat in the dryer. if it doesnt work then basically there isnt anything else to do.
Even in the hottest water they will not shrink more tan 1%. Maybe you can use them as nightwear.
