Roach question?

Question:I just moved from NY to VA. As we were unloading the truck, my husband noticed a roach. I have never seen one in my life as most roaches don't invade apts in the colder parts of the north east. I think it is possible that the truck we moved in (24 foot Budget rental) had roaches. Yesterday we found 2. One in the sink and one in a cupboard. There was no food in the apartment yet because we literally just moved in and no one has been in this apt since February.

Yesterday and today, I have been cleaning glasses/dishes before and after use, drying them immediately, wiping everything down INCLUDING the sink to keep water away and taking out every bit of garbage as we use it. It is annoying, but today we did a LOT of active searching (ie darkening the room for 30 mins, open cupboards and shining a flashlight in. No roaches, no poop trails. We already placed 12 bait traps. How long do you think we have to go without seeing one (or poop from one) until we are probably clear?

Answers:
When it comes to roaches and homes there are only 2 kinds of roaches (there are really many kinds). 1. Occasional invaders or outside roaches which are no problem- just use a bait or an aresol pesticide. Then, there is # 2-the German roach. If you have picked up a German roach you may be in trouble. They live with people only-they do not live outside. They are difficult to control. If you have Germans-you will know it soon. They multiply so fast that within a month or two you will see a roach every time you open a drawer or cabinet door. If you start seeing lots of small roaches every day in your kitchen-call for help. If not-then don't sweat it.

There are roaches, and then there are water bugs.
Are they small slim brown ones, or oval shiny reddish brown ones. or the large 1 1/2 inch dark brown ones.

Small slim brown ones will hide and breed, and infest areas that are prone to moisture, under kitchen sinks and in bathrooms. The best is COMBAT GEL that comes in a syringe and applied in a bead in common areas.

The oval reddish brown ones are the German cockroach and are very hard to get rid of. But use the above product for best results.

The larger 1 1/2 inch ones are called water bugs, or palmetto bugs. They love moist areas outside, like in pine straw, or pine bark in landscaping. They will also live in the casing of the water meter, and in sewers, and moist cools areas under your house. They will come inside! The best product for these are the borax products that you can put outside and underneath your house.
If their the small cockroaches get the combat gold bait traps for water bugs. We had them bad so we called an exterminator and that's what he told us to do, and believe me it works. You will have to leave them out 3 to 6 months changing them every 3 months. If you have the big cockroaches or water bugs that means you have termites and you won't get rid of them until you call out an exterminator to get rid of the termites. I hope this will be of some help to you.
get boric acid powder from home depot, spray at baseboards, under sink, basement corners, and toss out every cardboard box used,or folded , onboard truck during move,,,,,try to get powder behind baseboards, caulk to seal them, and keep kids away from the stuff
