Vacuum the water, and if the stain is still there,mix bran with white vinegar until it forms clumps and rub it over your sofa. Vacuum it when it is dry.
Don't think you should have tried cleaning it. The only solution would be to steam the velvet and hopefully some of the water rings will come off. If the stains are on the cushions and they are removeable you could steam them with your kettle and see what happens before you go to the expense of renting a steamer or if you have a small clothes steamer you can try that.
