What is the best way to clean a microwave that has food stuck stuck to it?

Put a bowl of water in it and heat it to boiling. That should loosen the crud, then wipe it up with a paper towel. Don't use cleaners as they can make food taste nasty for a long time.
It depends where the food is stuck. If it is stuck to the floor under the tray, heavy chemicals should do the job. Just don't get them in the motor if there is a turntable shaft down there. Just try to get rid of all the residue so there won't be any odor.
As for the top, anything that is acceptable to use for cleaning plastic should help. It might help to heat some water for several minutes in the microwave to let the humidity help loosen things.
get some simple green, or Lysol all purpose cleaner works really well also ... (possibly with bleach) Get a sponge (that you don't use on the dishes :-) saturate with hot water and get the inside of the microwave moist .. then spray down good! let soak for 10 minutes or so... then wipe down with same sponge to get the food off or into a pile... depending on how bad it is ... then use a rag or paper towel to wipe dry and remove excess food :-) works for me.
to add to evolved's answer:
put a microwave safe bowl of water with a quartered lemon in it in the microwave and heat for about 5 minutes. then, wipe clean with a damp cloth or a paper towel. this will help with oily residue and stuck on foods AND it will smell very fresh :-)
Spray the microwave with a degreaser like (MEAN GREEN OR GREASED LIGHTENING) both can be bought at Walmart. Let it soak for a few minutes and then use the rough side of the sponge and it all should come right off. Rinse it out real good and then dry out with a clean cloth.
i boil a large glass of water in the microwave, let it sit about 5 min, and everything gets soft and wipes right off.
spray with some windex (like alot ) all over the inside even the inside top, and let it sit then it should wipe away. whatever doesnt repeat it over again. i would'nt suggets spraying anything else like mister clean or anything
Spray inside of microwave with glass cleaner & let it soak for 15 minutes or so. Wipe clean.
I saw this on TV and it works fab -
get a thick cloth and rinse it in cold water & add some dish liquid, squeeze it out but not all of it, then put it in the microwave for 2 minutes on high power. The steam will help release the hard food, and you can wipe it off after, but be careful not to burn yourself, rinse it with cold water to make sure.
boil some water and a lemon slice or two in a bowl in the microwave...don't open the door right away..give it a minute and the steam will help soak off the stuff! Should wipe clean and smell great !!
