Question:
Answers:
My husband and I fight about this one all of the time. He says up, I say DOWN because when you unload the dishwasher you crab hold of the spoon or fork you are gonna eat off of. Definately all goes down!!!!!!
The water pushes upward anyway.
good question. i make the spoon and fork handles all point down and my hubby does the opposite. whats the correct way? i swear they get cleaner the way i do it.
I usually point everything up except for the knives
I point forks and spoons down so when I unload, I'm not touching the part the people will eat from.
According to Ehow.com the handles should be down on all silverware except knives.
Every thing points up except the sharp knives, subject to more water spray that way, water not deflected by the basket they're in>>>>>>>>and stagger your spoons so they won't spoon in the basket. My silverware basket has a lid that opens so I don't have to touch the business ends of the spoons and forks.
After being stuck several times, this ole lady has learned to turn any sharp objects down. Especially if there are children around. Better to be safe than sorry. Never know when these freak accidents happen, like someone falling into the dishwasher and cutting their selves on something.
I really don't think it matters; but this is what I do: knives with points go in pointed down. Everything else, I alternate so I make sure they get clean. Some forks, butter knives and spoons point down, some point up.
From the standpoint of sanitation, I believe all should be pointed down. When a person takes them out of the dryer they shouldn't handle the portion that will go in food or in someone's mouth.
Also when there are large gatherings and packages of plastic forks, knives and spoons are open, they should be opened from the handle end, not where everyone is putting their hands on the part that goes into other's mouths.
knives down and allother utensils pointing up
For best cleaning, everything up. For safety, down. Best just to use your dishwasher as a sanatizer anyway. Rinse your dishes off before putting them in. Food should not go into the dishwasher, even if it has a special disposal that is supposed to take care of it. You are just adding food that can clog your hoses.
I usually put the prongs on the forks up because they slip down in the holes of the dishwasher thing. You do have to be a bit more careful when unloading.
