Ammonia vs. bleach???
Question:i used to be a bleach fanatic! anything i could bleach,and get away with, i would!! then, i started noticing, that while it cleans, it also destroys the fabric!then someone told me that they use ammonia, in the wash, because it cleans just as well,and it doesn't destroy the fabric! now, one of my friends tells me that ammonia is just as bad as bleach!

Since I live in an apartment, the manager provides us with our laundry detergent, fabric softener, bleach, and other fabric cleaners. Even though it is for free I try to avoid the bleach. It is so strong that it will eventually make your clothes fall apart, but first they will loosen. Never use bleach with colors, only whites. Ammonia and Pine Sol are more of a "bleach" for color clothing. It cleans them just as well except if you use bleach on colors it will fade and mix the colors of the fabrics. So, it all comes down to this. Only use bleach and ammonia (and/or pine sol) when absolutely needed. If you only use it here and there your fabrics will last a lot longer than if you use it everytime you wash them. Use bleach for whites and pine sol/ammonia for colors. But I recommend pine sol for colors.
Well- they both have their 'destoying' aspects. Bleach being harder on fabrics than ammonia. And DEFINETLY do not MIX them! Toxic gas fumes can really do you harm! I use BORAX in my laundry as a booster/cleaner. Alot less harsh than bleach and ammonia- especially on fabrics that the other chemicals harm. But as with alot of chemicals- more is NOT better! Use the recommended amount and 'soak'- then wash- or after the soak- rinse then wash normally. And the hardness of your water depends on how well any product works. Bleach and Ammonia have different effects also- Bleach WHITENS and ammonia gets out deep set stuff- like perspiration stains- it 'breaks down' the dirt better. So I use ammonia for soaking- and bleach in my whites. And borax to almost all my laundry except delicates. Still my favorite is Spray & Wash Stain Stick!
