after you clean the toilet,
add more ammonia or bleach and swish it around
in the clean water. and put it out in the sun !
Let it soak in a bleach solution in a bucket for an hour. Or go to the dollar store and buy a new one every couple months.
There are so many products available today that take the place of the old toilet brush. I use the Scotch Brite one with the disposable scrubbers that you just pop on the end, then once you are done the handle has a release on it so you don't have to touch the used end. Good luck! :-)
