How do you keep a house carpet clean?

Question:We have light carpeting in our base housing. I am tired of steam cleaning the carpet and a couple of days later, I have to clean it again! Does anybody know a way to protect the carpet, besides taking the shoes off while walking on it?
Thanks!

Answers:
My husband just got back from Iraq and got out of the army. I really hated living in on post housing with all that white carpet. This is what I did-- When ever any one comes over to the house have them take there shoes off when the come in the house. Have a sign up if you get tired of telling people and some people had left some slippers over at our house. I kept area rugs and runners in heavy traffic areas. I made every one keep there food and drinks in the kitchen. I drove the hubby and his friends nuts sometimes but I told them if they wanted to get down and suck the dirt out of the carpet they were welcome to.

Area rugs, clear vinyl runners in high traffic areas, etc.
Eat and drink only in the kitchen, with the exception of water.
Take your shoes off when entering the house. (lol thats the only way I know)
whipe your feet really good'
Sorry I cant help
I don't steam clean carpets every 2 days.
I agree with someone in here though
remove shoes,
don't allow eating in living room, if necessary rope off the living room when one is eating or drinking.
vacuum carpet at least twice weekly.
