You have plenty of good suggestions. I just want to add one caution: if you run the cycle with bleach and very hot water, make sure the area is very well ventilated, as the vapors may be unhealthy for you and others.
Also, if you purchased the appliance used, this may be a warning sign as well, as you may not know what may have been left behind by the previous owner.
Some detergents are better at preventing that type of odor than others. I use an organic detergent, and the clothes and linen don't pick up any negative odors as soon as with previous detergents.

put in a cupful of white vinegar without anything else and run it through a programme. That should do it!
Are you using liquitabs? I used them and my machine stank. I changed back to powder tablets and it's fine now. Apparently the liquitabs don't have chlorine in or something and are known to make machines smell. Try putting bicarb of soda into a wash, that should solve it.
Look for scum on the sealing ring for the door if it is a front loader.
If not get some bleach and do a run empty on the hottest wash
Put it on the hottest setting possible with nothing in it.
You could add some powder too but I tend to do mine with nothing added.

Run it through it's hottest wash cycle. The low temp cycles don't kill off the bugs.
Run a cycle with just bleach , that should do it :))
Leave the machine empty and put it on a hot wash cycle, with detergent in.
that's because they start to grow mold instantly after the machine stops. Try to remove clothes immediately after machine stops and use bleach through an empty cycle to remove any smell from washer drum.
put bicarb of soda in to the drawer and onto hottest setting and this should work..
check your waste pipe - water could be flowing back towards your washing machine if your pipe is not in the correct position - mine has to be arched to stop the flow back
You don't say what kind of water you have. I have well water and eventually, it stinks things up. Get someone who knows what they are doing, pull the washer apart and give it a good wash. You might also have to change the hoses. These also stink and it's not necessarily the drum. Fabric softener doesn't really matter here. You also might try letting the washer run with detergent and a lot of bleach, no clothes. Seems like a waste of water but you need to flush it out. Good luck!
Thing is most things sitting in a washing machine wet starts to smell after a few hrs.Best thing to do is air the clothes dry or if you tumble dry put in a scent sheet X Cindy
put it on a boil wash, with a tiny amount of bleach... works for me x
fill with hot water on normal cycle, puch stop when full, add 2 cups of bleach and 2 cups of dishwasher detergent.like palmolive, not dish soap, it will bubble too much. let cycle run for a few minutes to swish the water around and mix up the chemicals then push stop again. let soak for 24 hours and then let the machine complete its cycle.
Put one cup of bleach in without anything else & run it through a cycle, it will also kill bacteria which causes odor
Oust does a washing machine and dishwasher cleaner which also removes limescale. should be available in supermarkets.
Try running a cycle as others have suggested. Thereafter leave the machine's door open after you've finished your laundry. This allows any remaining dampness to air dry. I've been leaving the door open for years and no longer have that smelly washer problem.
wash something like white socks, use bleach instead of powder but only in the soap drawer
Hot water and one of those big boxes of baking soda. Let it fill, oscillate for 5 minutes, then turn it off so the water sits in there for 30 minutes. Then turn it back on and let it finish its cycle.
I haven't tried this on a washing machine, but I bet it will do the trick. Use like a gallon of white vinegar and run the washer through a rinse and spin cycle.
A second option would be a large box of Baking soda in a rinse and spin cycle.
Can you tell what the smell is? You might have to treat it regularly when you find something that works for you. Fabric softeners are usually petroleum based; if these tips don't work, you might consider contacting the manufacturer, they usually have excellent customer tips.
I used fabric softener for a while but stopped because I hated the way it built up in there. Yuck. Can you use dryer sheets instead?
there is a powder u get form hardware stores wash it itself once a month and it cleans your full machine
i had to do this for my grans machine it stunk. i put some bleach in the powder compartment and ran a hot cycle with no items in the drum. i then ran a real hot cycle with nothing in the drawer or drum to get rid of any bleach residue. worked as far as i know
Pour a gallon of vinegar into the water as it is filling up. Let it set for at least two hours, all night if you can and then finish the cycle. Make sure underneath the washing machine is not the culprit if it has been sitting outside or in a storage house.
The smell is caused by a build up of soap on the outside of the drum.
Put the washer on it's highest setting without anything in the drum - no powder, clothes etc.
Let it run it full cycle.
If this doesn't cure the problem straight away repeat the procedure.
Twice is usually enough to do the trick.
Run a complete empty cycle with 1 cup of vinegar. Leave the lid up on your machine when you wash clothes this allows air to pass in and around the drum which helps odor problems.
And you should never leave clothes sitting in the washer, this causes mildew on clothing and in the washer, therefore you have odor problems.
Scrub it with bleach and water. then use a whole thing of vinegar (big bottle) and dump it in and run a regular load with nothing in it but the water and vinegar.
I do it all the time-my fiance gets grease and tar on his work clothing all the time.
You need to clean inside the washing machine for sometime.
I think its normal that it gets bad smell if you leave the washed clothes inside washng machine for two hours if the door is close. I experienced that already. If its front door, U need to leave it open after u use it so it gets dry also inside so that the smell will be lesser.
remove the clothes right away ... if u leave clothes in any washer machine wet they will smell and have to be rewashed.. sound like also washer is not draining completely if it is smelling
