Are Oreck vacuum cleaners really worth the extra expense?

Question:If you have an Oreck vacuum, could you give me some feedback please? My biggest cleaning problem right now is cats. We've gotten rid of all our carpets - vinyl or laminate floors only, which has eliminated all the pet odors. But it is still hard to get rid of all the pet hair (etc) that builds up on all their favorite bedding or couches.

I've got my eye on the 1400 Series canister vacuum ($899! What am I thinking??!?!) But if it does what it claims, I think this would be worth it.

I appreciate any feedback based on your experience with Oreck products. Thanks!

I am of the opinion that you can't go wrong purchasing an Oreck product. It is quality--and they have the ability to back up their quality with great service from one of their 450 Clean Home Center stores.

To all the Oreck "bashers" out there--get a life. You are so misinformed. As far as the Consumer Reports ratings, they are a non-objective rating company. They don't accept any sort of advertising money, but will give your product a "great review" if your company "donates" to their "foundation". That sounds like extortion to me. Don't believe anything you read there--just that the #1 rated product is probably not the best one!

Buy an Oreck and you will be happy forever!!

Honeslty, you can do better with your money with a kirby. As silly as that seems, kirby's are built well. I've been involved with research into their two fan systems.
i wasnt impressed, i just bought a new vac, at walmart, hang on ill get the name Bissle power track, it was less than a hundred dollars, it sucks up the hair from three cats, it has a filter before the motor and a hepa filter on the exhaust, the replacment for both is ten bucks per package, you can wash out the foam filter that catches dust before it goes through the motor , i do that every time i use it, wash the foam filter and dirt cup out, good sized dirt cup , no bags, several height settings, onboard tools, rotating brush on the floor and one on the hose for your upholstry, im sold on it.
The Oreck is made for an 85 year old man or woman who can't lift anything over 8 pounds. The Oreck does not pick well at all. The only thing you are paying for are Mr. Oreck's TV and Newspaper Ads. Not only that if you have no carpet then do NOT get the Oreck. That is what the OReck is made for and if you use the Oreck on your hard surfaces it will scratch your floors because the brushroll is always spinning and the metal base plate will I repeat will scratch your floors. What you need is a canister, Uprights like BIssell and Kirby and made for alot of carpeting. A canister is made to get under and around everything and is epecially nice on bare wood floors. The vacuum you need is the Miele S4 Sirius Vacuum Cleaner. Miele has been around since 1899 and has been making vacuums since 1927. They are sold in over 80 different countries and Miele does 4 billion dollars in business a year. The Miele Sirius is a beautiful machine. It is very very small yet super powerful. It has Miele's new Vortex Motor in it which will suck anything up. It is also very very quiet. It has went through alot of testing. Before any production process begins, all components are put through rigorous tests and are subjected to enormous strain .. stress that exceeds typical residential household use. Only when all the components, electronic, and floor tools have successfully passed each critical exam will the Miele name be bestowed on them. The SBB300-3 FloorBrush is amazing. Natural wood, laminate or ceramic floors look stunning but can be difficult to clean, as care must be taken not to damage the delicate surface. The parquet floorbrush is specially designed for these types of floors as it features delicate bristles for a thorough yet gentle clean. It has a 90° rotation and is exceptionally agile at cleaning around obstacles such as table legs etc. Natural wood, laminate or ceramic floors look stunning but can be difficult to clean, as care must be taken not to damage the delicate surface. It is made to last 20 to 25 years and has a 7 year motor warranty. You can call up Mr. Vac and Mrs. Sew and they will give you a phone special price of $339 (The Sirius is found everywhere on the internet for $419). Tell Lisa and Joe, Kevin told you about it! :)
Not according to Consumer Reports! Oreck is one of their lower rated vacuums. Their "best buy" is Kenmore (Sears) Progressive with Direct Drive 35922 that sells for $300 and is rated "excellent" for removing pet hair. I don't usually buy service policies, but if you buy a vacuum from Sears I recommend it, because they not only repair free of charge during the covered period -- they inspect/service your vacuum annually and even replace the HEPA filter for free when it's needed.
