They save money, and time, as you can really fit quite a bit into each load. The downside with mine, is that there is no real setting for very small loads.
You will also need to purchase a high efficiency detergent, as regular detergent can harm your machine.
If you have a lot of laundry, then they are worth the initial up front cost, which when I bought mine was substantially higher than a tradtional top loader.

I really don't like a front load washer mostly because I often think of something else to throw in after it got started. Like that sock laying on the floor.and the other one is already in the washing machine! Also if you accidentally get too much soap or something in there, it's a pain to stop the cycle.
a lot of times as a repairman i see people who leave things in there pockets like screws or other sharp things during washing and they puncture the rubber gasket that protects the washer from leaking.
