How long does it usually take for a washing machine to go to the rinse cycle so I can add my fabric softener?

If your washing machine is like mine, set your kitchen cooking timer for 17-20 minutes. My entire wash cycle is 30 minutes, so you can judge that when about 2/3 - 3/4 of the wash time is up, it's time for the softener.
I always try to remember to set my timer--when I'm doing a pre-soak, or whatever. Time flies when you aren't paying attention to it.

Buy the fabric softener ball that you just fill up and throw it in when you start the load then you don't have to worry about timing it.
Depends on your washing machine. And the size of the load (small, med, large) and the cycle (normal, gentle, etc) you use can make a difference, also. Best thing to do is put in a load and then time it yourself. I have the times written down for my washing machine for all sizes and cycles. That way you'll know for sure.
The regular wash cycle is usually about 30 minutes...and the last rinse is usually about 8 minutes, so check around 20 minutes or so...or better yet, check your machine for an automatic softener dispenser and add it to that OR buy one of those liquid softener balls (called Downy balls, I think), and add it to the beginning of the cycle...then you don't have to worry about it at all.
