Can you answer this admittedly boring question about dishwashers ?
Question:I've just bought one and bought the washing tablets to go in it,but what is the rinse aid for? Do you have to put it in everytime?
Answers:
The rinse aid helps your cutlery and glasses stay shiny.
No you only need to fill it up when it is empty. There should be some place you put it in, and you just fill that up every time it is empty. Maybe once a week.
You should have dishwasher salt too.
I think the rinse aid is already added to some of the washing tablets - that's what I hope anyway as I've never used anything but them in my dishwasher. Read the packet of the tablets to check which type you have.
It's supposed to give things an extra "sparkle"!
There should be a reservoir in your machine and an indicator to show the level of rinsaid left. You need to top it up from time to time when the indicator tells you to!
Rinse aid prevents spots on dishes and glasses when they dry. It's also said to help prevent buildup of lime etc on dishwasher parts. Many dishwashers have a dispenser for rinse aid that needs to be filled only every so-many cycles. If you don't have such a dispenser (usually it's in the door and looks like a knob, and can be screwed and unscrewed), then you need to add rinse agent every cycle to get the benefits. I have pretty soft water and don't usually bother.
No you don't just fill the rinse aid dispenser ( usually next to the detergent dispenser ) it will have a max' level mark on it then just keep an eye on it when it gets low refill it
If you read the box they come the washing tablets should contain everything you need. I still add the salt and rinse aid even though I use the tablets because the lights come on on the front of my dishwasher when they are empty and it's really annoying. I do find the rinse aid gives a little more sparkle though. Because I use the tablets I have the setting for the rinse aid down on the lowest and only have to fill it about once a month.
Hope this helps x
use FINISH tablets 5in1 they have the rinse aid in them
have tried different makes but always come back to them

Rinse aid is so your dishes are not spotted especially the clear glasses. You can usually find it in your door. It is a screw cap that you open and fill with a rinse aid. I myself use Jet aid and you fill it up and you should not have to fill it again for around 10 days. I have never heard about putting salt in your dishwasher. Just make sure you never put regular soap like Dawn in your dishwasher because you will have water and bubbles all over your kitchen!
You add rinse aid and salt to new dishwashers. If you use the new tablets with salt and rinse aid in them you wont have to to these up for ages. There should be an indicator on your machine to warn you when these are getting low.
Rinse aid is does just what it says on the box. Salt...Are you in a hard water area? does the kettle fur up with limescale?
If you are in hard water area, you need saly to "regenerate" the water softener resin column. This softens the water, to prevent streaking from chalky deposits.
I NEVER EVER buy salt in a supermarket, better to go to a DIY store, get water softener salt..much cheaper.
Rinse aid is a degreasant I think. It helps to ensure that soap residues etc are removed from your plates/pans etc.
Salt is used to soften water and help reduce the need for soap. If you live in a hard water area you'll need to keep this topped up.
You only top up Rinse aid or Salt occasionally - you'll notice the performance of your dishwasher decrease if you forget.
Don't forget to use a dishwasher cleaner occasionally too.
Just buy a tablet that has rinse aid and salt built in just look out for a 4-in-1 tablet when you shopping.saves you a load of hassle! :o)
if you watch the television you must have see the adverts for 'shine' which keeps everything sparkling clean
