Natural Slate Floors?
Question:does anyone know of a specific wax or cleaner for a slate sloor, it is in my foyer, and is looking dull, i would like to put someething on it, to make the colours come out and make it easier to sweep.
Answers:
First and foremost, SEAL YOUR SLATE. Seal your slate and grout. It is a natural stone and pourus, it will take on water and grease stains and will discolor easily. Sealing makes it less pervious to staining and discoloration and water penetration. You should seal once a year. This is the first step to easier cleaning on a daily basis.
Clean stone surfaces with a few drops of neutral cleaner, stone soap (available at hardware store or from your stone dealer) or a mild liquid dishwashing detergent and warm water. Use a clean rag mop on floors and a soft cloth for other surfaces for best results. Too much cleaner or soap may leave a film and cause streaks. Rinse the surface thoroughly after washing with the soap solution and dry with a soft cloth. Change the rinse water frequently. Do not use scouring powders or creams; these products contain abrasives that may scratch the surface.
i sometimes use car wax or armor all. kinda funny but it works
hi there:
From a safety standpoint standard waxing isn't a good idea, slate and ceramic will become extremly slippery if waxed and stepped on with wet shoes. Unless you use a walk runner like commercial buildings.
Your expensive solution however is any number of grit based waxes avaiable at a flooring store.
Convience and decorate is what i do. Use a standard floor wax like mop and glow then when floor is almost dry add a light sprinkling of play sand , sea shell perimeter, flake dust from a craft store or any thing else from nothin to insane...whats important is that the main walk area has some texture to make it safe to walk on after a snow or rainy day.
hope this helps
