How do you motivate (and stay motivated) yourself when you are feeling lazy to do all the household chores?

We all dread it... house chores. Fortunately for me, I only do it once every two weeks. But when the day comes, lots of places and stuff needs to be cleaned. Yet, on the same day, I experience a sense of awful dread and laziness at all the task that must be completed by the end of the day.

How do you get motivated to do things that you don't want to do but know that you have to do it no matter what?

I stay motivated by thinking of all the germs breeding and how gross it all is. I think it would be humiliating to have someone walk in and notice the house stunk, or was really messy! Not to mention junk attracts BUGS LIKE ROACHES! EWWWW!! Try doing a little bit every other day at least. Don't let it build up to the point it takes all day then it won't be so intimidating!

Turn on some peppy music. Whatever gets you going. I like to dance around and clean. :o) That helps me.
It also helps me to go for a run first. Clears my mind and helps me focus on what I need to get done. :o)
i read the services offered ad's in the local paper ,i have called to get prices too...when i see that i cant afford that service it motivates me ... actually i did a deep cleaning and organization and i work hard to put things where they belong and pick up often to keep the mess to a manageable size, only drag out what you need and put it away when not in use... hope this helped.
First charge your batteries. Lay down on your bed for 1/2 hr. You will notice the difference . Then set the alarm clock to go off in 15 min´s time. Pick one room or one thing to do. always work in the one room, never take thing´s back to their rightful places until you finish what you are doing. You don´t have to do all in one day, 15 min´s here and their helps a lot. Let´s start with your bedroom, Ready ? Go. All dirty clothes in a pile next to the bedroom door , along with any other thing´s that don´t belong. All clean clothes to the closet, jean´s jumper´s belts, all folded or hang them up. Don´t forget the shoes from under the bed. Easy, Once the clock sound´s , you either stop for the day, or if you think you would rather carry on , set the clock for another 15, min´s. Just remember , always reward yourself when you finish the job you are doing. 15 min´s Try for yourself. No surprise you can´t motivate yourself , leaving everything to do at once.15 min´s
I use to be the same way. I HATE cleaning so would put it off and do it "ALL" in one day. Laundry too. Wouldn't it be great if you could spend just 15-30 min everyday and your house stay sparkling clean?? FLYLADY is the greatest!! You don't even have to start with a clean house... it will all get done eventually. I would dread people coming over and insisted anyone call first so I could do a quick run-through. Now, my floors are always vaccummed, bathrooms clean, laundry caught-up, dishes washed all, with a little effort and no stress. Her system is awesome. www.flylady.com and it's FREE!
One of my most useful tips when cleaning a room full of junk is, bring in the trashcan and an empty laundry basket. Toss things in the garbage as you go and fill the laundry basket with things that don't belong in the room. When the room is clean, then you can put the things in the basket away. I use to get easily sidetracked and overwhelmed wandering from room to room putting things up.
HTH Good luck!
Try this! We do the "10 on, 10 off" cleanup at our house. Our family of four assembles the cleaning supplies, sets a timer for 10 minutes, and attacks one room. We clean madly until the 10 minutes are up. When the timer goes off, everyone quits immediately and takes a 10 minute break. (We usually flop down and read.) After 10 minutes, we assemble the supplies in another room and repeat the process. It is more fun to clean as a group, and we actually have a good time; my kids love it. You wouldn't believe what you can accomplish in 10 minutes!
It would be easier if you keep things picked up and not have so much to do when you do it the one time in two weeks. I use to wait and do everything at one time like that and I dreaded it and it seemed to take me forever. I keep things done on a daily basis like laundry and dishes so there isn't so much to do at once. You can pretend like it isn't your house and you are cleaning it for someone else or that someone is coming to visit ... these can motivate you!
i set a goal for myself like today i am cleaning the bathroom and vacuuming. i am halfway done already and am rewarding myself with a break to play on the computer. if i have company coming over i tend to turn on some music (i created a playlist just for house cleaning) and then dont stop til it is done.
I try to straighten up every night, so when cleaning day comes, there isn't quite so much to do. It helps.

It's so hard to get motivated and so easy to get distracted when the day for housework comes, so I try to avoid the distractions from the time I get out of bed. Breakfast at the table: no tv, no paper, no magazine. After breakfast, no shower, straight into grubbies. No point in showering until the work is done anyway, and it gives me something to look forward to when it's all done.

Then it's time to clean. I turn on the radio and get to work. I start a load of laundry first, then get to work. I don't go by the "one room at a time" rule. Sometimes you need a change of scenery to keep motivated. I often find myself getting bored with what I'm doing, so I'll do something else in another room for a while. It doesn't matter what order you do things in as long as they get done. That way I don't need to take breaks either. If you take a break, it makes it that much harder to get going again.

Also, if it's a beautiful day, I'll take a break from the housework and go do some yardwork for a while.
I clean during commercials when watching tv. Every single commercial break I get up and do something, whether it is loading/unloading the dishwasher, sweeping the floor in one room, washing a couple of windows or mirrors, changing a load of laundry, just doing something. It helps to keep up on things, I don't need to stare at the commercials anyway, and I don't get burned out on cleaning.
