How can I clean and fluff my heavy futon mattress?

Question:My futon has a very heavy and thick mattress on it that cannot fit into a washer. Despite my regular flipping and rotating, over the last year it has flattened out so much that it's more uncomfortable to sit on than a junior high school desk chair. It's also been subjected to quite a few beverage spills, so it could use a thorough cleaning (yes, I already have a protective cover for it too).

It's a stuffed mattress, so its pretty much just a bunch of fluffy material jammed into a cloth bag with a zipper. I've considered just emtpying it out and washing the mattress covers so they tighten up, then just try to cram all of the fluff back into them; however, I'm thinking that will just give me a big blob of fluff. Any tips?

Your own idea is the best for this type of cleaning, just empty out the contents and wash, this is the only way to wash your futon Good Luck !
I say get rid of it, it is not easy cleaning it. Replace it with a lighter, more convenient mattress. You will never regret doiing that.
Unfortunately there isn't much you can do. Vacuum it and hand clean it, is just about what you can do. You may have to invest in an other futon mattress.
For future reference - The best way to keep your futon plump, comfy and stain-free is to cover it and flip it regularly.

~Hang your futon outside in the sun to freshen it up! While it's hanging outside "beat it" the old fashioned way to get rid of dust and fluff it up by actually manipulating it.
~Air your mattress out each morning - if using your futon as a bed - by folding back the covers to the bottom of the bed for half an hour before you make it. This will also prevent moisture buildup. Also... try to never place damp towels on your futon.
~Vacuum the mattress regularly to remove dust.
