Can you clean black leather with bleach?
Question:i know, it sounds a little stupid...
my husband wants to clean his nasty work boots that have accumulated mold spores on them with bleach. i say this will ruin them as bleach poured on black would turn it red. i would just as well use dawn to get them clean. and i can't throw them in the washer because it will ruin them for sure...this already happened to another pair of boots that i cleaned for him. he is a cook so his shoes get pretty gross.
thanks.

I would try spray on Lysol let it dry, this should kill the mold and them a wet towel or some household spray cleaner to remove the grease.
DO NOT put leather or suede or anything like that in the washer. And get that bleach away from the boots, girl!! It's probably gonna make spots, or something. Try hot water, and maybe a tiny pinch of that scrubbing powder you use to clean the sink. You know what I'm talking about? It's a cylinder, and There's like 5 holes on the top, and it's soft white powder that smells a little like chemicals. Good luck! I'm sorry if it doesn't work out though.
You're right the bleach will turn them reddish. What you can do if there is no other option is use the bleach (or you could try ammonia BUT NOT TOGETHER! THEY COMBUST) and if it does mess up the color, they sell leather dyes/paints that are amazing which you can find at your local shoe-maker.
Better yet, try drowning the little buggers with a strong solution of Lysol floor cleaner. My father had some weird jungle rot, making his shoes dangerous for anyone else to wear. Nevertheless, by soaking them in that solution for a couple of days, and drying them thoroughly, they were sterilized. He let me wear them after he retired.
