Is there any way to get the smell of pee out of my stepdaughter's mattress?
Question:My stepdaughter is 5, and has begun peeing the bed again nightly. I work 24 hour shifts on weekends, so I don't even get home untill the next day. Her sheets get washed as soon as I get home, but the problem is that it has gotten so far into the mattress I can't get it out. We have tried baking soda and vinager. It got rid of the overwhelming smell when you walked into the room, but I put my hand on her bed and my hand reeked like urine. I'm looking for a new mattress that we can afford but does anyone have any ideas untill we find one?
Answers:
In the pet department, get a product called "OUT!". Pour it directly on mattress and let it saturate the area and air dry. Once the mattress is dry, cover it with a vinyl mattress cover to protect it from further accidents.
Urine Gone and Febreeze to clean it then cover the mattress with a vinyl cover. This worked well for us...we had a cat that use to get shut into bedrooms while we took day trips! We also enclosed some dryer sheets in the vinyl cover but you can't smell any urine at all!
Also don't give her anything more to drink 2 hours before bed time.
I would use a solution of pickling vingar ( it's stronger) and water....drag it outside in the sun to dry.
go to pet store and get
urine gone or natures way
i would take and spray it with a bleach/water solution on both sides and let that dry in the sun...u need to buy a zip up mattress cover for the next bed you buy.would save alot of trouble in the end
Buy some Odoban from walmart and spray on it. It smells like baby powder and once it drys, flip it and repeat. Then buy a rubber sheet or shower curtain liner to use under the fitted sheet until you can get a new mattress. The girl is obviously distraught about something or has a medical condition worth looking into.
You may try "eau de javel", a disinfecting agent with bleaching powers, but this has two disadvantages. First you must make sure that not the slightest bit remains, so that the skin of your stepdaughter cannot get in touch with it. Second "eau de javel" has a strong smell itself.
What you might want to do is rent a steam carpet cleaner about $12.00 and steam clean the mattress before you use any odor eliminator. I did it to my chair after my fox terrier puppy had a boo boo.
This is for urine odors:

Use OdorXit, it costs $40 to make 4 gallons, but is very useful and you will find additional uses for it. Also, the site is very good at making you understand what makes urine odor such a difficult problem.

In the meantime, buy a couple of absorbent washable squares to place under her body while she sleeps. Pull-ups may just let her keep peeing.
Urin Odors:
To remove offensive odors from furniture and rugs: make a solution of 3 parts Vinegar to 7 parts water, pour in a spray bottle and spritz the area. Allow to air dry, in your case I'd suggest propping up the mattress, windows up and all, and spritzing one side lightly at a time. Once the mattress is dry you should not have any remaining odors. If possible set a small fan up to blow onto the mattress, or turn on her ceiling fan, if she has one.
To remove offensive odors from linens: use one cup of Vinegar in your wash cycle, along with your usual detergent. This will not damage dark colored items, and will actually boost your usual detergent's ability to clean, as well as help remove tough stains!! The Vinegar will neutralize any smell and will not leave an odor once it drys.
