I'm not sure if this will work on spiders or not, but I read once to get rid of roaches to leave some wine in a container on the counter and they get drunk and go to roach heaven. You could also try Black Flag or Fogger Bombs.
I find the phone book very handy - not for ringing anyone, just for chucking on them! Sorry but that's how I eliminate them. There are however things you can plug in your electric sockets that drive them away - I've seen them on a shopping channel but can't remember which. I think they were around 30 quid for 2.
To be honest with you I would get a professional to get rid of the spiders. I had a nephew get bit by spider and it got infected. My husband every fall & spring goes to Lowes and gets bug spray for spiders and other insects and sprays all around the foundation on the outside and inside. He does not like spiders.
I clean houses and office I never sweep up insects in my sweeper like spiders unless you empty the vaccum bag. The sweeper I use it has a permenant bag, so I usually just pick the insect up with paper towel or kleenex.
