Answers:
If it is too hot and the clothes sit outside too long, you will not get the nice smell no matter what you do,
Conditioner and softener are not the same thing...

If you tumble dry the clothes they lose the nice smell ...Line drying is best and if that still doesnt work then change conditioner ..
Try washing your clothes on a cold wash . Your clothes will come out soft even without adding the softener. But as you want your clothes to smell extra nice, add it just the same. You will notice the difference. Try, PS. they will be just as clean , using the cold water
I use fairy washing machine liquid and Lenor (the blue one) concentrate softner and they always smell nice. Sometimes I find that drying stuff on the line doesn't make it smell that nice at all - a bit fousty sometimes. I prefer to use a tumble dryer.

Check out MY carbon footprint baby! lol ;)

Maybe try a stronger smelling washing powder - My Mum uses Arial and it always smells LUSH!
completely disagree with Joe,tumble drying retains all the smells,or so the wife rages on about it to me.but i must admit the clothes come out smelling and feeling better than they do line dried.
Make sure you are not overloading your washing machine, and use more fabric softener in the wash. My washing never smells like the fabric softener either, but sometimes my mum will do some of my washing at her house and it comes back smelling lovely.
She uses those bounce tumble drier sheets in the drier, but she also puts a couple of fresh ones in with the clean stuff when she brings it over. That could be the best solution for you. When you put your clean laundry away just stick a couple of those sheets in the cupboard or drawers with it.
I promise use WISK, which is like 3 or 4 dollars. At walmart or dollar store or whatever. Then use a more expensive liquid fabric softener. Like bounty with Febreze almost 5 dollars. When I am doing laundry I can smell it outside my house. So maybe try that.
I use blue Bold and blue Lenor(concentrate), washed all my work clothes, line dried (EVERY TIME), went on holiday, had a week off when I came back, (3 weeks in total), when I retured to work, my friends all knew I was there as they could still smell the fragrance from my clothes that had been done 3 weeks previous. I always get good comments about the way my clothes smell, its great. Try my combination, it never fails,Good Luckx
Hiu,
I use Ariel Ulra with Comfort and use some softner in the ironing water too. Just a few drops. Keeps them smelling clean and fersh. Do I just line dry them.
Try using Ariel washing up powder & comfort softener. I use this combination and my clothes smell delightful!

If not, another thing you could try is to listen out for the machine draining the water - near the end of the cycle - and pour the softener into the drawer then. As it is near the end, there is less chance of it being diluted again, and again with water, so the smell will be more fresh.
Washing is only half the job. It's all in the ironing, sweetie... If you like laundry smells, you should get a good steam iron and fill it with a hint of your favourite fragrance and allow the steam to work its magic through your clothes.
I'd luv to know how go with it..!

Enjoy..!
Well, I have had the same problem, and I found the solution:

- softener may smell nice, but it does hide the fact that sometimes clothes are dirty, and it's not ecologically sound. Also, I use the machine's dryer, so the smell of softener is gone anyway, but it does leave a lingering weird after-smell which annoyed me most. Waste of money, imo.

- consequently, I do not use softener anymore, I use dryer balls:

My fabric and clothes actually do not smell of *anything* but it softens better than before, especially towels. They last for 5 years.
