My laundry, specifically my TOWELS, always smell musty, what can I do?

Question:Even immediately after washing with GREAT smelling Detergent & Fabric Softener & immed. REMOVING them from the washer (not letting them sit).
Is my water hard?
What could be the problem?

Answers:
Add a cup or two of baking soda in with the wash.

This works AWESOME and if you do have hard water and don't want to get the whole "Hey Culligan Man" thing for your house, or if your renting or in an apartment - this will soften the water (that's all those pellets are anyway)

Just make sure you cut back on your detergent don't add any extra! Softer water uses less detergent - so you will save some money. I used it for years when I was renting and apartment that had super hard water. I also used like a teaspoon when washing my hair and rinsing my hair. And if add a cup or so to your bathwater it will soften your skin and make your bubble bath really cool!

I use a color safe bleach on my towels and I have hard well water. Also, make sure that they are completely dry.
add either white vinegar or ammonia, yes ammonia, to your wash water. about a cup of either one in a full load. works like a charm!!
moth balls fragrant drawer sachets.
Try drying them in the dryer, and/or washing with an Oxy detergent
give them plenty of room for agitating... i wash a half-load of towels in a full load of water. i know it's wasteful, but it really works.
your water may benefit from a filter or softening agent, ask you neighbors if they have the same problem You probably have well water?

It is costly to treat all your wash water so if cost is an issue consider that a clothes line or some dryer sheets may help reduce the musty smell.
Try to wash it alone in warm/hot water & then dry in the dryer. Sometimes wet towels smell musty but not after drying.
Fabric softener is the absolutely worse thing to use long term. You should only use it once every 3 washes. Anyways, what is happened is bad bacteria is growing on your towels. Everytime they get wet the bacteria grows. Fabric softener helps the bacteria stick to the towels. To get rid of them use a capful of bleach in the water. It will kill the bacteria.
Try this, Run your washing machine on the highest setting, which normally is 90Âșc, add a cup of bleach, do the same again and add a cup of vinegar, ( NO CLOTHES) of course you know that. This will give your machine a good clean to the pipes and the inside of your machine.
I had the same problem when I had to keep my bathroom closed (with a toddler) and they never really dried out after a shower.

I wash my towels in hot water now and haven't had a problem since. Someone suggested adding vinegar, but I never had to do that.

Good luck!
Try using pine sol in the laundry, that will cut the musty smell. I use Tide with Downy. Clothes always has a nice scent to them.
To kill the bacteria, you can add 1/2- 1 cup of distilled white vinegar. It kills mold, bacteria and germs, deodorizes and works as a fabric softener.
I know the vinegar remedy would work- we keep a gallon in our laundry for those times someone forgets to move the laundry to the dryer for days and it gets mildewy.
Try color safe bleach and hot water , you can also try baking soda in the wash.
