Funny you should ask.I just asked this question a couple of weeks ago and got numerous suggestions.the one that worked----put 1 cup plain white ammonia in your wash water and use only 1/2 suggested washing detergent. (Because the
ammonia is sudsy). The smell is gone after washing this way
one time. Just wash as usual after this.
Gain with bleach and you could soak them.
Don't leave your laundry in the washing machine after it's finished washing. Dry it immediately. That is what causes sour smells.
Once you have one and you need to get rid of it, rewash the load. Once the water is full and starts agitating (wash cycle) add a cup of white vinegar, slowly. Finish the cycle and dry.
Are you storing them in the bathroom for use? If so try storing in a linen closet outside the bathrooms. Moisture from baths and showers gets in the towels and you get musty unpleasant smelling linens.
Detergent and fabric softener always works for me.
store items in dry area.wash in baking soda. do not put item in dryer in until you are sure the smell is out. that makes it harder to get the smell out.
Use an all fabric bleach like Clorox 2.
If they are really smelly, soak them overnight in the washing machine. Wash them with your choice of detergent the next day.
They will smell so fresh !!
What the others said is good. Also make sure they are totally dry before storing or folding.
use bleach or Oxy clean in the wash
dry immediately after it is washed with a strong fabric softener sheet.
make sure towels are completely dry before you fold and store them. do not store then in the bathroom but in a hallway closet as moisture from showers doesn't get at them to make then damp and smelly.
