Any good suggestions to clean old caked on grease (left by a previous tenant) from a microwave/stove hood?

Question:I just moved into a new apartment and the former tenant never cleaned under the microwave/stove hood. There must be years of caked on grease under there. I've tried everything, including chiseling it off, and I can't make a dent. The landlord won't replace it or do anything about it. Any suggestions on what may clean up this mess?

Answers:
The best thing would be to use spray on oven cleaner. Remove the screen filters first (if you can) and spray them in the sink. Spray the cleaner on all the greasy areas of the oven hood and leave it on for at least 15 or 20 minutes. Then put rubber gloves on and use a wet soapy cloth to remove. I find that oven cleaner also works great on things like my stainless steel electric kettle when it's covered in grease splashes from cooking.

50% ammonia, 50% water.

Make sure there is no bleach around, or bleach residue.
I've found 409 to be good at this.
OMG. That is so disgusting. I don't understand people including your landlord! I assume the hood is over the stove. Try boiling some water and get some steam going under there. It may loosen things up. Lysol always worked pretty good for me. Good luck.
Get yourself a bottle of Greased Lightning. It's available in the cleaning aisle of your Wal-Marts, Krogers, Lowes, etc. Spray it and let it soak overnight. Scrub. Repeat. It isn't supposed to be used on painted surfaces, but you could always repaint with high temperature paint available in the grill section of aforementioned stores.

You could also use Oven Cleaner, but I personally think the Greased Lightning works better.
I used a auto spray degreaser called Blast on my hood. It comes in an orange bottle/ an orange sent.
Grease in a vent over a stove is a fire hazard. If it is on the visible parts, it probably is also inside the vent pipe itself. Point that out to the landlord and tell him if he does not do something about it, you will report it as a fire violation. The fine is usually pretty big.

If that does not work, I would use oven cleaner. Cover up everything under the vent with aluminum foil. Then spray the cleaner over all the grease areas. Do not forget to remove any filters and spray up the vent pipe also. Let it sit for 3-4 hours then wipe it off. Wear gloves and eye protection as you will have to look up the vent to clean and you do not want to get any of that stuff in your eyes. You may have to repeat if the grease is extra thick. Once you got it down to where you want it, wash it all with soap and water and dry it well. After you are done completely, fold up the aluminum foil and throw it away.
the screens can be placed in the dishwasher. it makes them like new, and i agree with the automotive degreaser. i've used it and it really works.
Oven cleaner works wonders!!You can also use it on the filter and soak in warm soapy water.
Mean Green-you can find it at the Dollar General and it seriously works wonders! Spray it and let it soak for a couple minutes and use a green scratch pad. You may also need a razor blade for the tough spots, but I can guaruntee this will work.
Try spraying "Goo-Gone" on it or you could use oven cleaner on it too.
